Chapter 3 - Where It Started
[Now, let’s see how good you are. Play some piece that you know]
“Hah? I should play something?” Junsu asked cutely. He turned his head to face the piano once he saw Yoochun nodded his head. A couple of minutes passed but there’s no sound coming out from the piano “Uhh.. what should I play?” He said, finally giving up to think on his own.
But Yoochun only shrugged his shoulder. Uhh, I do learn some of the basic skill. But it’s not that I remember the notes for some song. Slowly, Junsu put his finger to the key, pressing the key while trying to remember the notes.
Then a laughing sound could be heard from Yoochun. He laughed silently while covering his mouth, but Junsu could still hear him laughing. “What the…”
“I’m sorry.” There we go, his sexy bed voice. Junsu muttered on his head. Junsu saw him writing something on his notes and then gave it to him to see.
[Why did you play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star?]
“But you said to me to play the piece that I know.” Junsu said with the face red from embarrassment “What did you expect me to play? Beethoven? Chopin? I even forget half of this song.” He covered his face again.
Then Junsu felt Yoochun taking a seat beside him. The piano’s chair is wide enough for two people but he never thought that Yoochun would sit right beside him. “Should we make you master this one first then?” Yoochun asked with a smile. Junsu nodded his head.
He saw how Yoochun played the piano. The long and slender fingers dancing beautifully on the piano and Junsu found it as a turn on. Junsu slapped his head absentmindedly, making a pretty loud sound, but thankfully Yoochun didn’t seem to notice as he was still playing the piece.
“There” Yoochun said, giving him another smile. “Try it.”
“Huh? That’s it? You play it, then you want me to do it just like you?” Junsu gave Yoochun an are-you-insane look when Yoochun nodded his head.
“What?” Yoochun asked when he saw how Junsu glared at him. “Whatever.” Junsu said then he faced the piano again.
Yoochun smiled when Junsu started to play the piano clumsily. Sometimes he would scrunch his face when he forgot the notes, sometimes he would tilt his head cutely when he pressed the wrong key.
‘I could really die from his never-ending cuteness,’ he thought.
Suddenly, the smile on his face dropped when he saw Junsu’s mouth moving, saying something that Yoochun know, is not in Korean. From the way Junsu moved his mouth, with a steady rhythm, he knew it very well that Junsu is singing right now.
For all his life, Yoochun never once thought of having his hearing back. He’s fine with the way he is now but seeing Junsu singing with such a joyful expression, Yoochun suddenly hoped so badly that he could hear him, even just for once.
“--Then you show your little light, twinkle twinkle through the night…” Junsu stopped singing when he felt Yoochun stares from his side “Wh-what?”
Yoochun shook his head and encouraged him to continue playing with a smile. Junsu blushed a little, seeing how Yoochun smiles generously to him. He played the piano again, but instead of singing, he decided to talk to Yoochun.
So he tried to play while facing Yoochun “You know,” that’s good Junsu, keep going “I thought you are a girl when I first saw you in school.” Great! I said it! He turned his head to the piano again.
“Huh?!” Junsu chuckled as he could imagine Yoochun with a confused expression.
“Yeah, with your long hair, and your skinny figure, I really though that you are a woman.” Junsu laughed when he saw that are-you-kidding-me face coming out from Yoochun.
Once again, Yoochun’s expression fell. How he wished he would be able to hear this boy laugh, loud and clear in his ears. Sometimes when he really wanted to hear something, he would imagine how it sounds in his head. Like, how the piano sounded, how Jaejoong laughed, how Changmin mumbled something incoherent in his sleep before he started hitting or kicking the air, even how the telephone sounded every time before Jaejoong answered the phone.
He could only imagine it because he heard it before. At least once in his life before he became deaf. Junsu’s laugh is different and he never heard it, which is hard for him to imagine, no matter how hard he tried to.
“Hey, Junsu, how does your laugh sound?” Yoochun felt surprised at himself for asking such question.
Junsu stopped laughing when he heard the question. “Huh?” It’s not like he could describe how he laugh, right? “Uhm…nice?”
Yoochun laughed. “Sure.” He said while laughing.
Junsu wanted to say something, but before he could, his house phone rang. “Oh, I’m coming.” He walked slowly to where the phone is, leaving Yoochun in the piano room, curious and amused.
A couple minutes later, when Yoochun was absorbed into playing the piano, someone tapped on his shoulder. He smiled when he realized that it was Junsu.
“Jaejoong ssi said it’s time for you to go to school.” Yoochun took a brief look at his watch and realized he was going to be late; he quickly got up from his seat and grabbed his bag from the table. “I got to go.” He said hurriedly, exiting the room and Junsu slowly followed behind him.
When he was about to go down, he suddenly stopped at the topmost step of the stairs. “Where is your room?” He asked. Junsu pointed to the room across the piano room, with a dolphin and all kind of ball stickers on the door.
“Don’t go downstairs then. I know my way out.” He smiled and said goodbye to Junsu before he headed down the stairs and left.
Junsu stood dumbfounded on the stairs when another shrill sound of the phone startled him. “Oh geez, don’t they know how hard it is for me to walk?” he complained as he hopped on his good foot to pick up the phone.
“Hello?” He answered.
“Junsu? How is it going?” It was Kibum.
“Good. Hey, where are you right now? You’re not at school right?” Junsu asked, just in case Kibum went to school, because Kibum was supposed to take a sick call from school. Yes, Junsu told him to be absent from school for a day so he could accompany him while Yoochun is teaching, not to leave him like what he did earlier.
“No. I’m at home. What did Yoochun songsaengnim did? Did he hug you? Or even better, did he kissed you?”
“Kibum!” He could hear a loud laugh from the other line. “you are so dead.”

“Welcome home~” Jaejoong said when Yoochun and Changmin arrived. “Dinner will be ready in a couple of minutes” he said cheerfully.
As usual, Changmin would go straight to his room, to do his homework, and Yoochun would come to the kitchen to help Jaejoong with his cooking or whatever he could help with.
“How is work?” Jaejoong asked while making a sign with his hand.
[Good] Yoochun answered with a sign too.
“Eh, that’s all? Good? How is you new student?”
Jaejoong question brought back the image of a laughing Junsu in Yochun’s head. “Heyyy~” Jaejoong nudged him, leaving Yoochun all flustered when he realized that he was thinking about Junsu.
[He’s...] Yoochun hesitated for a bit before he moved his hand to make another sign [..interesting]
“Ohooo... I smell something fishy!”
“What is it that smells fishy?” Changmin said when he came out from his room, wearing a loose shirt and a pair of khaki pants.
Yoochun tried to change the topic by asking Changmin [Aren’t you supposed to be working on your homework?] And then felt dissapointed when he Changmin told him he got no homework for tomorrow.
“Your brother..” Jaejoong started while putting the kimchi he made on a plate “taught a new student today.”
“Oh? You got a new student?” Changmin asked Yoochun, earning a small nod from the elder one. “Who is it?”
“He’s from your school. You know Kim Junsu?” Jaejoong said while he served the food on table with the help of Yoochun.
“Kim Junsu?”
“Do you know him?” Both Jaejoong and Changmin turned to Yoochun with surprise. It was rare for Yoochun to talk except if there are something important. He always said that talking is useless as he can’t even hear his own voice.
Changmin and Jaejoong looking at each other, exchanging looks but in the end they only shrugged their shoulders and started to eat.
“Well, I know him. But it’s not like we’re close or something like that”
“How does he sound when he laughed?” Yoochun asked curiously.
“Hyung, did you fall and hit your head before you came home? You’re weird today,” Changmin asked in disbelief. To hear his brother talking so casually is already so weird. And now he’s asking about how someone laugh? It is as if the bird is going into the water and swim, and the fish is going fly to the sky. It is indeed as weird as that.
“Forget about it,” Yoochun shrugged and started to eat his dinner.
“I bet your brother falling in love with Junsu.” Jaejoong whispered to Changmin, and Yoochun was confused when he saw Jaejoong suddenly giggling like a fan girl.

It’s been three days since Junsu’s lesson started and Junsu learned that Yoochun actually likes to smile a lot as if it is his nature to be nice. Junsu doesn’t know why, but every time Yoochun is smiling, he is always looking at Junsu. Junsu can’t help it but blush and he could not hide his face since Yoochun needs to see his lips if they are communicating.
“That’s all.” Yoochun said when he finished explaining and giving Junsu some example for their lesson.
Junsu tried to concentrate on the lesson but he couldn’t. Something has been occupying his thoughts about his teacher and he wished to know.
“Songsaengnim..” he started “...can I ask you something?”
When he earned a yes from Yoochun, he continue with his question “Were you deaf since you were born?”
Yoochun was surprised at the question. Seeing this, Junsu realized that he’s not supposed to ask such question.
“I’m sorry...I didn’t mean to...” he apologized with his head hanging low, feeling bad for not being considerated of the other. He frowned and looked up when he heard a rustling sound from Yoochun.
It appeared that Yoochun was searching for his notepad in his bag since he hasn’t used it for awhile and wrote something on it. It took a couple of minutes before he finished writing and give the notepad to Junsu to read.
[I was born normal.]
The first sentence make Junsu lifted his head from the note to take a brief look to Yoochun who was occupied with the piano.
[I was normal like you until an accident changed everything. I was with my family and we were on our way home from the country side from visiting my grandparents. Our car got hit by a sleeping truck driver and sent the car off the bridge. My parents died instantly when the truck crashed into us.]
Junsu lifted his head for a bit to see the ceiling as he could feel his eyes getting teary. Then he started to read the next sentence again.
[My brother ended up getting fractured bones since he was not wearing the seatbelt. I was fine since I was wearing the seatbelt but when the car fell off the bridge, I passed out from the shock. I woke up later, learned that I was in coma for a while and was told that they found us in the water around 20 minutes after the crash and that my parents were already gone. It was a miracle that my brother and I made it. I became deaf as a side effect from ear infection and high fever. Since I was in coma for a few days, there was water in my ear canals and it got infected. At the same time, I also got a high fever. I got double dosage of antibiotics for both, thus ending up deaf. It can’t be helped but I’m glad I made it out alive even if I won’t be able to hear again. What is funny that even though I can no longer hear the world, piano became my solace. I can always hear the piano in my head, it’s like a gift to me. It may be nothing to others but it is something to me. Isn’t it a miracle that I could still hear the sound of the piano in my head whenever I play it even though I can’t hear anything beside that?]
Junsu sobbed when he read the last sentence. He couldn’t believe that such a kind person like Yoochun had to go through all of this.
When Junsu was trying to stop his tears, he suddenly felt a pair of arms wrapping his body and took him into a warm hug. “Don’t feel bad for me, I’m happy nevertheless.”
Junsu only nodded his head. I’ll do anything for you, Yoochun. Anything.
