My latest Crack Theory is that the beach scene of X-Men: First Class was consciously or subconsciously influenced by the ending of Dr. Horrible. We have the Sympathetic Antihero/Antivillain (Billy/Erik), the Cute Idealist Love Interest (Penny/Charles), the protagonist's victory over his nemesis (Captain Hammer/Shaw) being marred by Love Interest getting hurt as collateral damage (Penny gets shrapnel-fridged/Charles gets hit by a deflected bullet), the protagonist's descent into true supervillainy, and a shot of the protagonist in a new outfit that makes significant use of the color red.
As much as I'm an Xavier/Magneto shipper, and didn't want them to end an epic friendship over a little thing like the ethics of trying to subjugate humanity, I recently realized that I would have reacted to the beach scene differently if Charles had been a woman.
"Girl, he just tried to kill a bunch of people and got you shot in the spine! Dump his Byronic ass! Or at least make him wait on you hand and foot while you recover." As for fem!Erik - I think she could be magnificent, but I doubt Hollywood is ready for a woman with that much manpain.
