I wonder if part of the reason male characters usually get more attention in fandom is due, not to prowriters not knowing how to do interesting women or internalized misogyny or any of the other popular hypotheses, but to the fact that a lot of fannish love gets expressed in subjecting beloved characters to various types of undignified sexualized objectification (hookerfic, some types of hurt/comfort, fanart of large burly military men dressed up as fifties housewives, et cetera). Given the legacy of certain kinds of skeeviness accompanying depictions of women in mainstream media, I can see how a female fanwriter or artist might feel a bit weird in subjecting a female character to the sorts of things that often get dumped on popular prettyboys, even if the fan in question has no objections to female-character-centric porn as such.
