Yes, that's a lovely idea for fic-writing with which you've become moderately obsessed in the last 24 hours. However, what you have is not a bunny, it's a concept that would take a novel to do justice, and you really--really--do not have time to write a novel just now. Also, it's not a concept that necessarily would be fic in any fandom in which you currently write; it's much more a hard SF kind of thought. It might be squooshable into the softer and more fantastical spaces in which you often write, but it ...might not, and then you'd just be fucking it up. Stop it.
...Though I suppose it might fit into BSG somewhere.

Seriously, that's going to be a longer story than anything you have written to date, and therefore would have to come after: Smutmas, S_C, the H/R thing, the pinch, yuletide (ooh, what if a yuletide request matches it?), D_D, and and and whatever else you have on your plate.
Just write down the framework and leave it. You know you don't write long and complex all that well, so it's going to need ruminating time anyway.
