I've been kind of emo lately because my 3rd year students are graduating soon, and everyone has been writing goodbye messages and I've actually only got two or three more classes with the 3rd years because everything else is cancelled. :( Most of my favorite students are among the 3rd years (ah ha ha, of course I have favorites). They are all-around an amazingly sweet bunch of students. I'll have to do a big post about them one of these days.
What's more, I'll be leaving Japan in August, so there will be even more goodbyes soon. :( I love Japan, but my family misses me and I miss them, and ze boyfriend is leaving in August too and Japan just wouldn't be the same without him.
Le sigh. But I still have several more months before I leave and a batch of new students to look forward to (but I want my old students waaaaaah!), so I shall try to be positive about the new school year! Starting now!
So class 2-4 was working on a clothes shopping skit out of the textbook. I gave them a dialogue flowchart and asked them to fill in some of the conversation details--like what type clothing, colors, prices, etc.--on their own. And this being class 2-4, they were some rather creative results.
A conversation I overheard during practice time:
Takesugi: May I help you?
Atsushi: Yes, I'm looking for diarrhea. (Yes, they know how to say diarrhea in English, I taught it to them for the textbook's sickness page)
Takesugi: What color are you looking for?
Atsushi: Something dark.
Takesugi: How about this black one?
Atsushi: I like the color.
Takesugi: Diarrhea!
Atsushi: Diarrhea!
(and so on...I was practicing with another student, so I couldn't really keep listening to the diarrhea dialogue.)
Aaaaand another pair of students, doing a presentation in front of the class:
Ayaka: May I help you?
Yuuya: Yes, I'm looking for a skirt. (Yuuya is a boy, btw)
Ayaka: What color are you looking for?
Yuuya: Something light.
Ayaka: How about this pink one? ^_^
Yuuya: I like the color! Do you have one in my size?
Ayaka: What size are you?
Yuuya: Small. (Yuuya is definitely not a small)
Ayaka: Here you are.
Yuuya: Thank you. May I try this on?
Ayaka: Of course.
Yuuya: (mimes trying it on) How much is this?
Ayaka: 100 yen (about 1 dollar)
Yuuya: Do you have anything cheaper?
Ayaka: How about this 2 yen one?
Yuuya: That's still too expensive.
Ayaka: How about this 1 yen one?
Yuuya: That's still too expensive.
Ayaka: I'm sorry, we don't have anything cheaper.
Yuuya: I see. (Doesn't buy anything)
It's quite amazing how a few very genki students can change the atmosphere of a class. :) (Although it's also true that a few very students with a bad attitude can poison a class's atmosphere.)
