Dear Republicans: The True Meaning of Hope
I dunno if you remember about seven years ago, but in 2003 you were all hot for us to invade Iraq. We weren't sure why. Saddam Hussein wasn't the guy who'd bombed us, and the evidence for WMD was thin on the ground even then, and yes Saddam was a bad guy but so were many others - did we need to drop everything and stomp in there then?
We complained a lot, but in the end nobody with the power listened. And we went in there. And it felt pretty shitty, feeling like the country we loved was doing something damn foolish and costly and potentially world-breaking, and that nobody wanted to hear us.
The worst of us were fucking stupid and hoped that the whole damn thing would blow up in the Republicans' face and that the U.S. would fail. But most of us bit down on the tin foil and said, "Well, shit, now that we're in it, I sure fucking hope I was wrong."
That's you know. You lost, and it sucks for you, but it's time for you to learn this bitter quandary: you can't stop the change, so you'd better start wishing that the bill is better than you think it is and that things will work out. Because otherwise, you're cheering for the country to be doomed simply to satisfy some political revenge scheme - and that is the worst kind of petty treason.
Incidentally: it's been years later, and a lot of damn foolish mistakes have been made, and [he] haven't nearly seen the benefits promised, but Iraq seems to be calming down after seven years. This wasn't [his] ideal way of doing things, and it certainly didn't lead to a renaissance of Democracy in the Middle East, but [he's] still hoping. Because when you can't stop the change and real lives are at stake, the best you can do is start praying for things to work out.
