What a long, tiring, brilliant weekend I just had there.
Thursday was really hot and uncomfortable; so much so I decided to crack out the Converse to chill my feet down a bit, before heading down to Rebellious Jukebox, aka April's Disco. The music was great, the cheap cocktails were great... it was great. Great to see all the old crew down... me, Bob, Aprilian, Sarah, Emily, Meller, Helen, Drew, Seb, Tom... great.
Friday was partially pleasant. I did very little up until me, Seb and April went into town (in Seb's car no doubt) to drop the stuff off for the gig. We got a Subway and looked around some quirky shops before soundcheck, and then the gig. Further details are available
here. Later on went to Cord Bar to have a few and talked of Curb and Arrested Development, before heading back because April was taking some pictures of the band. I'll put them up when she sends them to me.
Then it was Saturday. Absolutely hot as hell, and my t-shirt/jeans/Converse outfit got an unprescendented third consecutive outing, to the surprise of nobody. I met Gary in Stockport, before heading down to Manchester, first for some drinks in a bar that very well could have been a gay bar, then an unplanned trip right around the centre of town, before meeting Bob and briefly Meller in Retro Bar.
Then to the Fall gig we went, where Drew and his sister, Martin, and Cay, as well as the aforementioned trio all were. We sat about drinking overpriced pints before heading in, missing the two musical support acts, to view John Cooper Clarke, who was as amazing as usual. Then followed a bizarre 'visual DJ' type act, who played footage of Led Zep, Queen and others over weird beats and repetead sections from the musical acts mentioned. After a round of "booos" and "fuck off"s, The Fall came on, and played the following songs. I have helpfully annotated them.
Coming Down (brand new)
Very catchy. Drums reminded me of Whip It by Devo(?!)
Assume (Fall Heads Roll)
Not as good as Youwanner, which they sadly didn't play, but still a nice Fall-in-2005-by-numbers.
Pacifying Joint (Fall Heads Roll)
Fantastic.
Theme From Sparta F.C. (Country On the Click)
Quite weak, mainly due to new guitarist messing up the riff.
Mountain Energei (Country On the Click)
Absolutely stunning.
What About Us? (Fall Heads Roll)
Seems to drag a bit, but the 'chorus' bits were very good indeed.
Formation (brand new)
I can't remember this. I do remember enjoying the brand new songs more than the older stuff, however.
I Can Hear the Grass Grow (Fall Heads Roll)
A bit muffled. I never really liked this anyway.
Wrong Place, Right Time (I Am Kurious Oranj)
As heavy as fuck... yet another rebirth for this already classic song. This time it's riff was insanely heavy, with a clicking drum machine adding another layer.
White Line Fever (brand new)
Can't recall.
Bo Demmick (Fall Heads Roll)
Drums were too quiet. It's mostly just drums.
Mr. Pharmacist (Bend Sinister)
Great version... nobody more than during the rockabilly bit.
Blindness (Fall Heads Roll)
Astounding.

Midnight in Aspen (Fall Heads Roll)
A bit boring after a while. Surprised this hasn't been dropped yet.
Systematic Abuse (brand new)
Excellent, although a tad similar to Pacifying Joint and What About Us? Goes on for ages as well.
Then, a bit of bus, a section of Pringles, and a lot of bed.
Sunday followed Saturday, and in it's usual cheeky way was noticably less busy. It was Bob's 19th birthday so we just wandered around some pubs in Stockport, drinking, smoking and eating fine cajun chicken sandwiches, before heading to his dad's (beautiful) flat in Heaton Moor. Here we listened to some Can and Fall, before heading back, via the takeaway, to Stockport. The Baker's Vaults were visited, and the following two hours followed a similar pattern as the preceding activities, only with Sarah added to the mix, as well as some tame jazz. Home, bed.
Any questions?
