[Katie thought she might give it a day. Maybe they were just playing a trick, and they'd come back and be all 'surprise!' and then Katie would sulk until they felt bad and brought her icecream or something. Such was as her imagination went. Their scents were still everywhere even if their things were gone; they couldn't have both gone home at once, could they?
It's a really quiet house.
And then she thinks maybe she'll just pretend they're still here and have gone camping and she's in charge of the house while they're gone. So she sings at the top of her lungs, and makes herself a blanket fort in the living room, and makes a big show of filling the fridge with healthy things and trying to cook herself vegetables for dinner. (That kinda fails, though. Sue her, cooking vegetables is just not her thing.)
Licorice knows Katie's fooling herself long before Katie does, the sleek black cat winding around her ankles and being reassuring. You still have me.
And the night is really lonely. But she stays home and stays up late, just in case. Maybe they'll come home and tell her off for still being up after midnight.
...
...even the dog is gone. Maybe the Malnosso knew that Katie and dogs just don't mix.
Jerks.
She wishes Brook were still here.
And she should tell someone, because Edward works at the smithy and Sigmund teaches fighting and people are going to notice they're gone.]
[Voice]
U-um.
Sigmund and Edward can't come into work. Because they're--
[...and she trails off there, because what the hell does she say? This is not a quavery voice, no sir.]
...they're off. Fighting dragons. [Fuck it. Lie big, Katie.] They'll be back soon.
[This shouldn't hurt so much. Everyone leaves eventually, right?]
