.hack//Tasogare no Udewa Densetsu

I finished watching .hack//Tasogare no Udewa Densetsu recently (apparently it's called .hack//udeden for short, so I'm going to refer to it as that henceforth). It sucked, unfortunately. It's really disappointing that I've disliked every .hack series after SIGN when I loved SIGN so much. SIGN was awesome, udeden tried to imitate it but it was only a cheap imitation.

The first five or so episodes were the worst. Okay, so we have two characters who won the same character models as Kite and Black Rose from the .hack games. Already it seems like it's just trying to play off the popularity of the .hack series and not trying to do anything interesting on its own. The characters are shallow and not very interesting. They meet up with other shallow, not very interesting characters and go on stupid quests.

After Rena (Black Rose's imitation) disappears and her real world self goes into a coma, the series had the potential to get very interesting. Unfortunately, it's just not. Rena wants to return to the real world, but all she can do is wander around in the weird area that no one can find until Shugo (Kite's imitation) finally gets the bright idea to use the bracelet Aura gave him. Of course, due to Plot they aren't able to rescue Rena just then, even though they can freaking see her running up to them as they escape from the area which is threatening to delete their characters.

The one bright side to this anime was Balmung. He was one of the very few characters that had an interesting personality. Perhaps that's because he originated in SIGN. Hmmm. But anyways, he had an interesting dilemma going on when a woman who appears to possibly be a lover from his past arrives on the scene and basically steals his job as a system admin. I liked the fact that they didn't really explain what went on in their past. I also liked the fact that Balmung, after losing his administrative privledges, still stuck around in The World to play as a user. He had interesting issues to work through, which made him interesting.

However, Balmung wasn't enough to save this anime of shallow characters and poor plot that tried to imitate SIGN but failed because it wasn't good enough.
