yamato nadeshiko shichi henge / perfect girl evolution / the wallflower

finished the live action drama, all 10 episodes.

it was...... well. once i could mentally separate it from all of the canon of the manga and even anime (which didn't stray too far from the manga, actually) i was able to just watch it.

sure it had a few OCs and strayed greatly from canon, but it was a jdorama adaptation and has the right to do so. but while a lot of things were missing, a lot of things were brought in: character depth, backstory, and exploring some things much further (kyohei's mom, etc).

somewhat weak production, direction, and even dialogue aside, the show brought a boatload of emotion and empathy, which equals depth, making you care so, so much about the characters they focused on that didn't have that exploration in canon, namely auntie and kyohei.

and i've always understood that, to adapt YNSH / PGE / tW, they would have to do one of two things: either make it like a dramedy or cut out a lot of the kitschy niche stuff (horror, fangirls, slapstick, etc.) and really play up the relationships and backstories. the latter of which they did.

so it meant changing the tone and tenor of the original series. but they fashioned a rather acceptable alternative, all things considered, and despite the rocky start (the first episode = oy oy oy...). i found the ending odd, but i can live with it.

all in all, not too shabby in the long run. :)
