Bob and Carrie had child #2 back on Wednesday at about 4 PM. Hannah Gail Mielke weighs 9 lb 7 oz at birth (same weight as older brother Ryan), and is 21.5 inches long (a half inch longer). Everyone's doing okay, though labor was a bit more painful this time around, with two failed epidurals earlier in the day.

On Monday and Tuesday, a few contractors will come over, rip out all the carpeting, and install some genuine authentic wood laminate. We chose Select Birch, at $1.68 per square foot. You don't want to know how much all the boxes, plus baseboards, reducers, etc cost. Plus labor, since I'd probably break my back moving the sofa sleeper and the armoire. The next 36 hours will be spent trying to remove as many junk/stray items as possible from said carpeting.

Koko has a new home as of last month. She's being well cared for, and has an 18-pound Princess kitty to keep her company. After a couple of days of one-sided growling and hissing, Princess came to terms with that fact that Koko just wasn't all that impressed with her behavior. Sounds like everyone's going to be fine.

My latest project at work involves prying up manhole covers and trying to figure out why certain subdivisions in the area have flooding problems. Okay, it's a little more complicated than that. Some pipes are undersized, and one of them has a live spring that prevents the ground from absorbing as much rainfall as it probably should. The deadline is the end of the month, and I'm about 50% sure I'll actually get it done on time. In the meantime, For Sale signs appear to be popping up like danelions in the project areas. I guess some folks are worried that our improvements may mess up their yard, or they have very little faith in the County and our company's ability to solve the problem.

Screen on the Green continues to be a political tool. When Robert Redford and Jane Fonda start with a claim that they're going to be apolitical, then proceed to slam Bush without mentioning him by name, they should expect the boos they received. Or maybe they were just preliminaries for the film "Barefoot in the Park", and no one was really listening to them . . . Still, you have to give credit to the Piedmont Park Conservancy for their efforts to save and preserve the gnat and the Tiger Mosquito, as well as West Nile.

We finally took first at Twain's under the new format, with the team name "Bedtime for Bonzo". How are we supposed to stop going to Twain's if we keep winning house cash, darn it? And how are we going to spend all $60 on a team that averages just five people?

Speaking of Bedtime for Bonzo, did anyone else notice Bill and Hillary sleeping during the service? Classy. Good thing Bill wasn't invited to speak - that might have been a bit embarrassing for him. It still could be bad for Hillary if she gets the nod for VP. Looks like even a "shining city on a hill" will always have a few bums sleeping in public . . .
