Ever since I first saw Fight Club and heard Tyler Durden's description of a a future where nature had taken back the cities of the world, I wanted to see a movie depicting just that. I am Legend takes it one step further by taking out all but one person. Beautiful! I loved seeing all the imaginative things a person would do and experience in an abandoned New York City setting. I was in awe! And thats when the stupid plot came in and ruined everything.
(semi-spoiler alert :-)
Yes, once again I'm going to take an unpopular stance on a movie that I'm more than a little sure is going to go on to be a big hit. As I said, I Love the concept of this movie. But then they had to go and throw "zombies" into it! Seriously?! Zombies!? Okay fine, I'll let that slide for now. I mean I suppose there had to be some sort of antagonist. But couldn't the CGI at least have been a little better? The City looked nothing less than spectacular. But the instant a character besides Will Smith was on the screen, they looked fake as hell. Even the "dark seekers" (zombies) looked like damn cartoons. And why did they climb and attack things JUST like the robots in i Robot? Lets keep our movies separate, shall we?
OH and if the Batman/Superman billboard in the first 5 minutes of the film was someone's idea of a sick joke on people like me who would kill to see that movie made, I will be pissed beyond all reason! :-P
My absolute biggest beef with this movie though was the underlying message they basically spring on you at the end. The movie acts as nothing more than an elaborate scare tactic into making people believe in god! We find a cure for cancer which wipes out all civilization, and only the "chosen ones" are left behind to create their perfect little society surrounded by huge wall. And in the center of it all, a cute little white church.
Okay, rant over :-P
I really did enjoy this movie. Will Smith's acting is top notch as always. The setting and character development is nothing short of incredible. The movie does a great job of sucking you in and making you feel like this is a world that could easily exist. I DO recommend seeing it. Just prepare to bombarded with someone's vision of idealism by the end.
I give this movie 4 funny dressed mannequins out of 5 :-)
Speaking of which, Who the Hell moved Fred!?!? Thats gonna drive me NUTS!!! ;-P
