vegetables

I was going to be vegan for a week, because my body feels like it's been undergoing a sustained and systematic onslaught of baked goods, chocolate, and local dairy. It's all been incredibly delicious, but heavy ( Read more... )

Yay, the beautiful world of vegetables... As someone who only dabbles in veganity for convenience and pleasure now and then, I'd just caution you to consume enough seven-grain and protein-rich foods to keep you going. Often when I'm having a serious craving for sweets or meats, it's because my hastily thrown-together veggie meals aren't providing me enough energy. You'll probably be better at the whole planning and recipe thing than me though.

Thanks for the advice -- I already give some thought to my protein consumption because of my inclinations towards being vegetarian (of course that still allows me the easy if drastic solution of just eating meat), but the grains reminder is helpful.

I was going to say that a week of being vegan for holiday-food-detox doesn't seem to require a lot of planning about nutritional balance, but perhaps a little planniing would help with the detox. :)

We should...um...do something sometime soon! My weekend plans involve DC for some amount of Fri.-Sun., but the details are still uncertain.

Well, *clearly* we should dine at Horizons some night for vege/vegan food (including vegan beer, does that foil detox?) and recipe ideas (I'm otherwise fairly unoriginal in that respect). They're closed Monday.... so, tomorrah or Thursday, perhaps?

I feel the same way. I don't even feel like going out to dinner lately (and it's one of my favorite things to do!) because I am done with decadent food :)

And we just finished all the delicious cheese in our refrigerator from new years (I love cheese plates!). Must now fill with veggies...

Going out for dinner is one of my favorite things to do too! :) I lobbied hard for sushi on my birthday the weekend before Christmas (light, perfectly proportioned, and full of veggies), and seafood at a Cuban restaurant and vegetarian options at a Moroccan restaurant have also been just the thing.

Growing up, I wasn't very adventurous with cheese. Since I moved to Philadelphia and became an aspiring foodie, one of my favorite things to do has been to visit DiBruno Bros. or one of the cheese stands at Reading Terminal and just ask them to recommend a new cheese. They ask you what kinds of things you like in a cheese, let you sample, etc. I'm slowly expanding my cheese horizons! But, since I've had people around my apartment on the weekends for brunch, I've gone through a lot of this amazing raw milk cheddar I buy from the Farmstand where I volunteer in omelettes with fresh local eggs accompanied by rich local milk -- so, I think I just need a little break from dairy for a week or two. Then, more cheese!

Okay, I'm all up on this post like I own it but I just had *one* more thing to say, on cheese... I've mentioned grocery as a great place to get cheese samples inexpensively, and the other day I tried a delicious rosemary manchego that wished it had been invited to your tapas party. ; )

Heh, you're allowed to take over my post. I *like* when people have things to say to me and to other blog readers! :)

Mmm, rosemary. Over new year's weekend, I worked at the Farmstand two afternoons, and there was a small jar of rosemary sprigs in front of the cash register. I spent the whole afternoon desperately wanting to eat something with rosemary! (Maybe after this small vegan phase I'll buy some lamb chops and cook them. I hear they are an easy cut of meat to cook, if not inexpensive.)

I've just been enjoying the Farmstand's raw milk cheddar, but I'm looking forward to trying new cheeses in a week or so. The Farmstand has a new cheese that's made with nettles! I've only tasted it once, so I don't remember much about it.
