800 miles is a long time in a car

220 miles: Went to OSCON. It was kind of a waste of my time, unfortunately. The SoC meetup, while interesting, wasn't really worth the trip; the exhibit hall was just as I feared, full of marketdroids. It was kind of fun to hear the JanRain fellas explain OpenID to a potential client at OSCAMP (next time I go to OSCON, I'll try to spend more time there -- it's closest to what I think OSCON really ought to be). Saw Oliver, and yet again got the feeling afterwards that I acted like I don't like him. I'm not sure why that keeps happening -- he's a good guy, I enjoy chatting with him, but every time I do I'm really awkward and inattentive (er, more awkward and inattentive than normal, that is). Wanted to, but couldn't make it to, the Ruby conference. Bummer.

580 miles: Tonight we're driving up to Seattle to look for a place to live. Man, if there is something that gives job hunting a run for its money for the top spot of "things Ryan finds depressing," apartment hunting might be that thing. I'm lucky I have K to do, like, almost all the work finding places on craigslist.

(To be clear: I'm looking for work. Developer conversant in Python, Java, Ruby, Perl ISO not-totally-boring programming job.)

I think we're going to be late coming in tonight, and are probably leaving Saturday evening to get back to PDX, but if any Seattleites want to have dinner or something we may be up for it. Gimme a call at 503.3131.876 on Saturday.
