Twenty

It is somehow the twentieth anniversary of the airing of the first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I should have a lot to say about this show and whatnot, but I'm nursing a kid with a concussion (he's fine... apart, you know, from the head injury).

I loved Buffy, and I loved its fandom, the first actual fandom I joined (in season seven). It ( Read more... )

Oh my goodness! Your poor guy. I've never had a concussion but I imagine that's got to be pretty rough. I hope he's feeling better very soon.

Re: Buffy. I wasn't really online yet at that time (or if I was, I was probably in the X-Files, or later West Wing, fandoms). I was a late bloomer because I couldn't afford my own computer for a while. And then it didn't occur to me to look up such programs until I'd browsed the 'net for a while. There was a whole fandom world out there I had no idea existed. So sadly I wasn't really a part of the Buffy online fandom except maybe on Television Without Pity.

I confess I didn't even watch Buffy until it had already been through 3 seasons. I'm sure I was watching other things, and the name "Buffy" didn't help its case. Since I didn't know anything really about the show except the name, I probably made all sorts of judge-y assumptions about it being really shallow. I had no idea the premise was about kickass empowered women. If I'd known, I definitely would have checked it out sooner.

I first came across the pilot episode of Angel on a Sunday afternoon while I was folding laundry. And the theme song sucked me in, made me actually look up from folding and say, "Ohhhh, that cello is gorgeous. Okay, you've got my attention. What is this show?" And then of course it had the awesome Joss sardonic wit, and the layers of dark, and I thought, "Wow, this is a really interesting show." I started watching Angel regularly... and then it had a crossover with Buffy, which was awesome too, and I said, "How could I not have been watching this?? I'm going to have to find a way to catch the first three seasons of Buffy. I really want to see it now!"

Not easy! I think I ended up buying them on VHS! 2 episodes per tape. LOL. Eventually I think I caught most of the rest of the reruns on cable.

It had its frustrating moments (mostly in seasons 6 and 7, heh), but for the most part I think it was a wonderful, unique show that made me think, and made me feel like I could stand up for myself more. It made me feel stronger and more present. And when it was good, it was really really good. ♥ I have a lot of love for both Buffy and Angel shows.

I said this over on Facebook today: "In these crazy, stressful, frustrating times where even our own president thinks women are to be mocked, shamed or grabbed illegally, perhaps we need more Buffy the Vampire Slayers. Perhaps it's time for a re-watch." ;)
