Lists: books, movies, and tv shows that have been formative for me

May 27, 2014 19:27

There's been a meme going around about ten formative books, movies, and TV shows. Not necessarily the ones you think are the best you've read/seen, but the ones that changed you and/or left a fundamental imprint on you. It's such a hard task for me, since I don't like to rank things I love and since I rarely if ever do memes, but I've been thinking about it quite a bit.

So.

In no particular order, ten-ish of each:

Books (I'm sticking to fiction, or otherwise we'll be here all day):
Gaudy Night, by Dorothy L. Sayers
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis
Night Train to Memphis, by Elizabeth Peters
Luck in the Shadows, by Lynn Flewelling
The Mists of Avalon, by Marion Zimmer Bradley
The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien
Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen
Guards! Guards!, by Terry Pratchett
Summers at Castle Auburn, by Sharon Shinn
A collection of WWI poetry I read in high school, the specific name of which escapes me.

Movies:
The Princess Bride
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (if pressed, I prefer Life of Brian, but Holy Grail made a bigger impact)
Gigi (no, not Gigli)
White Christmas
Henry V (Branagh's version)
Four Weddings and a Funeral
Say Anything
Top Hat
Pump Up the Volume
Much Ado About Nothing (Branagh's version)
The Fellowship of the Ring

TV Shows:
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (and Angel, of course)
The Cosby Show
Glee
The West Wing
Jem
The Muppet Show
Queer As Folk (US)
To The Manor Born
Arrested Development
The Daily Show
Friends

Psst, you should answer if you want to!
