Hello again LJ world! It feels like it's been so long, haha. *really, really needs to buy a computer* Still, I can't decide between getting  a cheapie for around $200 or going nicer for $400 so it's going to be a little while still while I waffle back and forth. Ah, indecision, it's a wonderful thing.

So at work this week I saw a girl who was ( Read more... )

i took my pc with what i found was a burned out cpu to a really great computer store-- he explained that because it was a cheap tiny piece of garbage that they are known for overheating and killing cpu's. he told me to save my money and get a full size pc from place like wal-mart with as much as i'm going to be using it (all day usually) and keep it well ventilated (for the summer i have the side off and have clamped a fan blowing directly on the cpu fan so it doesn't over heat...

the i bought one at sam's club for $500 (something like 500 gig hd and some other supposedly impressive numbers that weren't in the ones they had that included a monitor --since i already had a monitor i got the one with the bang) and then i got a connection adapter to plug in and slave my old hard drive.

google your computer model choices and read about the performance, complaints and failure record for each of them. make your comparison. don't ever buy any of those little tiny towers as they will cause cpu's to overheat as they don't have enough ventilation. if i had known i would have removed the components from the case and blew fans on them, but chances are it would have overheated anyway.

you can build your own computer -- just keep it cool (heat-sinks and fans).

i am not surprised by what you saw -- wal-mart is a place of nightmares.

Yikes, that sounds like a nightmare.

I actually had one of the ultra small forms for years and it held up surprisingly well. It finally just went kaput and I've put it back together so many times that it's just too late for it now.

I'd considered just building a computer but while I know a decent amount about some components, others I know very little about. I'm so indecisive anyhow, and given to doing tons of research in the first place, so even if I did go that route I'd probably take months to do it, and I really want to get one sooner rather than later (although that still requires sitting down and actually biting the bullet which I'm a big sissy about doing.) Ah well, for the time being I'm just keeping an eye on ebay and the Dell Outlet.

One day...one day ;p
