I've heard two theories for Regulus that I like. One in Acturis (I doubt I'm spelling that right), which is another star name. Regulus (I'm told) means "Little King" and Acturis is an old form of "Arthur," so he would be Little King Arthur, putting him in the "good" side rather than evil but gormless. The other theory is that the uncle whose name was burned off the family-tree tapestry had a name starting with A, though I don't remember what it was.
Arcturus? Poor child, stuck with two star names, but why not, in a family devoted to its own astronomical grandeur. It's unlikely he'll turn out to be plain Alan or something, though that would be funny. :)
Hey, maybe Regulus isn't dead at all, but was also secretly an Animagus who would turn into a lion. Or a bear. Or a bear and a lion. Okay, maybe not.
Maybe not. *grin* I like the idea of Alan, actually. I have this image of him trolling the Muggle gay bars, telling everyone his name is Alan, and all his friends telling him it's such a pity he doesn't have a cooler, more distinctive name.
Thank you for the spelling--my brain has been rather Detritus this morning.
Dumbledore mentions a rich uncle that Sirius (and Regulus) had, who's name starts with a A. Lots of people are guessing that this is Regulus' middle name.
I don't know about Lupin (this is also the book that has Fudge, Sirius, Umbridge, Pomona Sprout, Luna, Kreacher, etc), but since Fenrir prefers being a wolf, it makes sense that *he* would change his name.
Hee, yes, I'm pretty sure the names are the way they are because the writer is amusing herself - but man-behind-the-curtain explanations (or woman-behind-the-curtain, in this case) aren't nearly as much fun, you know?
Oh certainly, but it's hard for me to buy an in-world explanation for Remus that ignores everybody else. It's easier to think that in the Potterverse these words don't mean anything or that the names are being changed to protect all involved.
And how much do I adore the fact that Fenrir goes by Fenrir Greyback, big bad wolf eat the sun bring down the gods rar, and Lupin goes by... Lupin. A flower. He's, like, a werewolf hippie. Peace, man!
