Turns out that nursing really gives you a lot of quality reading time, which is great.
I read Uprooted, starting out in the early hours of labour and finished it a week ago during nursing in the middle of the night. I guess I'll always have a special memory of that book.
I really loved this book. It is very different from the Temeraire series. It feels a lot more personal, also darker and more like a fairy tail. I found the beginning a bit slow, when Agnieszka first starts to live in the wizard's tower, but once she starts to pick up magic and the threat of the wood becomes more clear, the book becomes a real page turner.
The corrupted wood has to be one of the scariest adversaries ever written. The way it feeeds from primal fears and human weakness, first in the villages and later at court, works perfectly. It's like the condensed darkness of fairy tales.
I also really liked the relationships between the protagonists. The stong focus of the friendship between Kasia and Agnieszka and also the understated romance.
oh, turns out baby, not so great for computer time.
