Most of all I feel that the puppies cheated us out of a damn good reading list, but now that the nomination numbers are out and the full list with the 15 most nominated stories is out, we can at least give some recognition to the authors that were cheated out of their spot on the ballot:
Best novel
I really want to give Marko Kloos "Lines of Departure" a shot, mainly because I found it really classy of him to withdraw the puppy nom and thus making the cathegory at least a game between three books.
After the puppies "Lock In" by John Scalzi was nominated, but I'm not really into dangerous virus stories, so I think I'll pass on that one.
"City of Stairs" by Robert Jackson Bennett on the other hand sounds like it might have very well been my personal frontrunner. I absolutely want to read that book.
"The Martian" by Andy Weir was a brilliant fun read and I highly recommend it.
"My Real Children" by Jo Walton was also one of my favorites this year. I read her books on a binge after getting hooked on Among Others.
Best Novella
"The Slow Regard of Silent Things" by Patrick Rothfuss was a mile better than everything on the ballot. It was completley cheated out of its Hugo.
The Regular, Ken Liu. I really heard a lot about Ken Liu and I have to check out one of his anthologies now.
Yesterday’s Kin by Nancy Kress
Grand Jete (The Great Leap) by Rachel Swirsky can be found online
The Mothers of Voorhisville by Mary Rickert, also available for free
Best Novelette
Since I didn't like "The Day the World Turned Upside Down" by Thomas Olde Heuvelt much, even though this was not a puppy nom, I'll have a look down the line here too.
Each to Each by Seanan McGuire
The Devil in America by Kai Ashante Wilson
The Litany of Earth by Ruthanna Emrys
The Magician and Laplace’s Demon by Tom Crosshill
Best Short Story
The Jackalope Wives by Ursula Vernon
The Breath of War by Aliette de Bodard
The Truth About Owls by Amal El-Mohtar
When It Ends, He Catches Her by Eugie Foster
A Kiss With Teeth by Max Gladstone
JWC Award for Best New Writer
Wesley Chu absolutely deserved his win but Andy Weir really could have given him a run for his money.
I'd not heard yet of the other three, but I'll be sure to check them out.
Alyssa Wong
Carmen Marchado
Django Wexler
Seems there was a lot of great stuff going around in scifi this year and I think it should really get the attention it was robbed off by the puppies. Fortunately the Nebula and Locus awards spread the word already.
Best Related Work
What Makes This Book so Great by Jo Walton would have been the clear winner for me. That book will be m downfall, it is giving me an amazon wish list a mile long and it overboils with love for scifi. Non of the crap the puppies spammed the ballot with could hold a candle to it
Chicks Dig Gaming by Jennifer Brozek, Robert Smith, and Lars
Pearson
Shadows Beneath: The Writing Excuses Anthology by Brandon Sanderson, Mary Robinette
Kowal, Dan Wells, Howard Taylor
Invisible by Jim C. Hines
Tropes vs Women: Women as Background Decoration by Anita Sarkeesian
I have not read any of the other but I will check them out.
