Bwah, I forgot just how good this show is! I will never be able to watch the Hollywood version now, because the loud snickering will get me thrown out of the cinema.
I just got to watching the ep tonight. So glad this show is back! Loved the snappy dialogue and allusions to the books too. I think I need to go back and read them all again as a refresher. And the cinematography was top notch, which isn't something I'm used to saying about any show other than BB :D
The end left me a bit meh though, knowing that Moffatt plays the same cheating death tricks on DW--I felt like he'd squeezed in a few too many twists at the expense of settling on the drama side of things with Irene. Attaining that balance between plot and emotive drive seems one of Moffatt's weaknesses. He never really gives you a chance to settle long enough to feel for his characters and what they're going through, so when they're placed in mortal danger it doesn't really feel as suspenseful as it should.
Nonetheless, I very much look forward to Hound of the Baskervilles :)
It was a complete treat. I really can't wait for the next one.
I agree about Moffat's writing. Sometimes it requires a certain suspense of emotional disbelieve. Also I was a bit annoyed about Irene's moriarty connection. Yeah, he needed a connection to the big antagonist but Irene Adler should mess with the Holmes boys on her own.
But otherwise it was simply brilliant fun. I love how the lines fly in that series.
I'm also looking forward to next week. Will this one also be written by Moffat? Weaknesses aside I still like his writing best.
Re Moffatt's writing, very true. You do have to live with a trade-off of emotional balance for great humour and cool plot constructions (however contrived), and for the most part I'm fine doing that. It was just because the whole Irene-Sherlock thing was the focus for this particular ep that it felt a touch off. Really, I'm splitting hairs for the most part. I'm not sure if he's written the next one, but given the title I really hope so!
Yeah, sometimes there is just one twist too many. The plot can take it, but the emotions become unbelievable. The same thing happened to RTD a lot too in the end of Doctor Who.
Also George from being human is going to be in the Hounds of Baskerville!!!! How cool is that?
