I guess I don't really hate people. I've been overworked lately which leads to feelings that strongly resemble hate. Right? There's actually not too much to complain about though. I turned 23 last Monday, and, aside from spending the first few hours of my birthday hot, nekkid, in the dark and unable to fall asleep thanks to a power outage during the freak heat wave, things went quite well.
-I talked a few other RCGs at work into going out with me for lunch. Faye gave me one of the
best birthday cards I've ever gotten before we left. The turn out was far better than I expected and the food didn't disappoint. Then again, food almost never disappoints when it's free. Another group of friends took me out for dinner in downtown San Jose and ice cream in Campbell.
-A check from the Neilsen ratings people arrived. Much like Stephen Colbert's limousine, my apartment is a Neilsen Household. It's pretty neat getting paid to do something I already do. The rich get richer! I am, however, doing my part to prevent those wankers at Fox from canceling Family Guy again.
-May brought more food in to work. She's quite possibly the best person in the world to share a cube wall with. She keeps me well fed and doesn't complain if I
shoot at her while she's on the phone. Yeah, after reading
this war story, I bought myself an early birthday present. What? I vowed to protect the sovereign nation of my cube by any means necessary, and I meant it!
-I lost money playing poker on Friday. What started off as an awesome
RCG BBQ on the company dime turned into a seedy cutthroat poker game after the crowd thinned out. I've never played Texas Hold'em before, so I went in knowing I wouldn't win my $5 buy-in back. It was fun, and I fully intend to write off this gambling loss on my next tax return.
-Saturday was a complete wash, but I learned a lot about my coworkers. One of the technicians and I worked from 10:30 AM to 9:00 PM finishing our manual and tedious netlist check. One of the CAD techs in Oregon had pulled a couple of all-nighters to get many of the high-speed buses tuned on our board. Neither of them put in for the massive overtime they worked. If I were eligible for overtime, I'd even bill for the time we spent eating lunch. They've both been working for a while, and I figured by that point one simply turned mercenary. I, the not-so-recent college grad who is still supposed to be idealistic, energetic, and willing to sacrifice for the group, still have a lot to learn about being a team player.
-At some point during the last week I got myself addicted to House. That smug bastard grew on me very quickly.
This entire week has been rough, but since I'm trying to cut down on the complaining and self-pity I'll spare you guys the details.
Lest people think I've grown soft with age, I'll end this post with something I hate: the iTunes Music Store! Isn't the point of iTMS not having to pay full price for a CD when you only want to hear one track? So why exactly do I have to pay $3.99 to get the
Gabriel & Dresden mix of Without You Near? *stabbity stab stab stab*
