Quick update on PAX.
AWESOME!
Yesterday (Friday), was day 1.
We were up early and in the huge line for the opening keynote/Penny Arcade Q&A #1/Rooster Teeth Q&A.
The RT panel was amazing. They showed
this awesome video (nsfw) and the last two episodes of the season. Plus they goofed around as they are wont to do.
Then we ate at some amazing sandwich place. They're famous for really fast subs? I forget the name
After that we headed to the convention centre and immediately went to the RT booth. There was a long line but it was only a 20 minute wait. We got there and chatted.
xsavedbygracex chatted with Brandon about Canada and Brett Hart while he grabbed her merch. I continued down the table and talked a bit to Jack, mostly me saying that he awesome when some guys commented on not knowing him.
I had brought my old S1 RvB dvd to get signed and when I got to Burnie he was all, "Oooh, season one!" and I explained to him that we had only recently gotten into RvB so that was kind of an iconic season for us. He asked if I wanted Monty (who is a new addition and did not work on that season) to sign it and I said of course and Monty was all, "Ooooh, season one..." And Burnie kept talking to me about the first season and I mentioned that we had heard of it before, from older brothers/internet but never really knew what it was until recently. Meanwhile, my dvd has been passed along to Joel and before I know it I have it signed by the 3 guys sitting there and have only been talking to Burnie. I felt kind of bad but I had to wait for Katt who fell behind so we had some quick shenanigans with the guys.
Monty: She needs an elastic (for Katt's poster she had them sign)
Joel: Elastics! I have elastics! (goes digging around behind him for elastics)
Katt: Joel, I have one, no, Joel (holds out hand like 'stop, don't worry)
Joel: (turns around, sees the hand and automatically gives a high five)
Katt: That's... not what I meant. I wasn't asking for a high five.
Burnie: (starts cracking up)
Katt: I already have an elastic.
Me: Where's my high five? (holds out hand for Joel to high five)
Joel: (is too preoccupied with the whole elastic dillemma)
Burnie: (laughing, holds up a hand from down the table to air high five me)
I forget what we did after that. Just wandered the expo hall, I believe. We were going to go to the Mega 64 panel but we missed it because we were in line for RT. Oh, we went shopping down and around Pike St. and ate at Johnny Rockets! I miss that place.
Then we made our way back to the convention center (after returning to Nordstrom where Katt had forgotten her signed poster) and waited in line for the PAX Late Show where some of the guys from RT were guests.
The Late Show was a horrible horrible gong show. The hosts were extremely bad and awkward, they didn't know the names of the guys and had no idea what they did. One kept calling machinima 'mah-kin-a-ma' and Geoff was purposefully being a jerk while also being (more than likely) drunk. There were two bowls of candy on the coffee table on stage and he put all of the candy from one in his mouth and all the candy from the other in his shirt pockets. He was generally Geoff while Burnie tried to keep everything together and Gus decided to enjoy himself and go along with Geoff's antics.
As soon as the RT guys were done being interviewed we snuck out the side door with them and ended up chatting with Gus for a bit. We just went up to ask for his and Geoff's signatures (and we still do not have Geoff's because he quickly ran off when we approached them) but we mentioned how bad/awkward the show had been and he definitely agreed.
Gus: Did you see his jaw when he laughed? It was like it was unhinged!
And he mentioned how he had to go because he had to go to the Frag Doll's party within the next 30 minutes or his spot would be gone.
Gus: (rolling his eyes) I don't normally go to these things but...
Me: You didn't go to their last one.
Gus: Yeah, I think they're still mad at me for that. It'll be worse if I don't show up to this one.
So he went his way and we headed back to the hotel.
Day 2 was a lot more down time than day 1.
We got up super early and got in line for the Bungie panel. We watched Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels on my laptop while we waited.
While we were walking into the room for the panel all the enforcers are like "go to the very front" so Katt and I are making jokes, as per usual.
Katt: Damn, I really wanted to sit at the back.
Random Guy: Yeah, I waited four hours not to sit in the front.
Katt: Exactly!
Random Guy: By the way, I like The Hush Sound sticker on your laptop.
Katt: Oh, that's hers. (points to me) He likes your Hush Sound sticker.
Me: Oh, cool!
Random Guy: Have you listened to Gold Motel?
Me: Yeah, they're pretty good. I'll always love The Hush Sound more, though.
Random Guy: Totally. I've only seen them once, they don't come that often.
Me: Yeah, I've seen them twice, but they don't come near us a whole lot either.
Katt: Where are you from?
Random Guy: Canada.
Katt/Me: Us too! Where?
Random Guy: Edmonton.
Katt: Oh my God! Us too! Edmonton buddies!
So, turns out this guy randomly sitting next to us (in the front row of the panel, I might add) was from Edmonton and loves The Hush Sound. There were weird, random conversations about using the force vs. jedi mind tricks for abortion. Idek.
So, after that panel we went to The Cheescake Factory for lunch AND OMG IT IS SO GOOD! We have some left over and I can't wait to eat it/there again.
We wandered around the expo for a bit more. Katt got the RT comics and Luke (an awesome canadian artist who draws the RT comics) was there and signed them all. We talked to him for a while and he showed us all of his sketches so far from PAX.
Me: (looking at a sketch upside down) Is that Gus? Riding a horse? Or, no, that's a cougar.
Luke: (turning it around for us) Yeah, it's a cougar. And this- (flips back a few pages to a sketch from the previous mentioned video) is Gus being a cougar.
Me: Oh my God. That is awesome. The things that man will do.
Katt: That was the first thing she said when we saw the video.
Luke: They just keep coming up with ideas and he doesn't say no, just goes for it.
Me: So awesome.
Then we played at the Microsoft section for a bit and when I glanced back over at the RT booth Matt was there so I went to go get his autograph.
Me: Could you sign this, please? All I need is you. And, well, Geoff. If we ever track him down.
Matt: Hahaha, yeah, good luck on that.
And it bears mentioning that Joel was always at the booth. ALWAYS. He's so sweet and awesome and nice. He's my favourite overall. Geoff is my favourite to look at but he can be a huge dick whereas Joel is just awesome all around.
After all of that we came back to the hotel. Katt napped and I watched RT shorts w/ commentary and managed to nap for 30 minutes maybe.
When we woke up it was time to go to the concert of the night, featuring MC Frontalot, Paul & Storm, and Jonathan Coulton. It was pretty much awesome.
Paul & Storm were so upbeat and hilarious and I think they were my favourite act overall of the night despite going in not knowing who they were. Wil Wheaton came out on stage for their last song, some song about a pirate where the audience had to yell "Arrr" at random points. But they kept getting distracted ("'That's More Like It, Sheep' is the name of my Justin Beiber cover band") and telling us to say "Arr" seductively or confused or surprised. It was a lot of fun.
(Edit: Also, because I forgot, Jamie Hyneman from Mythbusters was there! We were waiting in line and this guy walked right by us and I stared at him the entire way going, "Is that Jamie? Why the fuck would Jamie be here?" But we spotted him in the crowd and a bunch of people were tweeting that it was him so that was freaking awesome! I saw him pretending to be a zombie to "Re: Zombie" which makes me love him even more.)
Jonathan Coulton is amazing. He played a bunch of new songs and the old classics. I don't know a lot of his but he played the ones I did know.
JC: So, this is the part where I say, 'This is going to be the last song' and you go 'awww....'
Crowd: awwww-rrrrr.....
JC: And I'll say, 'No no no, that was the last guys.'
Some Dude: Freebird!
JC: Then, some guy will yell out 'Freebird' and I'll make a joke about ironic irony that nobody will get and I'll chuckle nervously and move on. We know this will not be the last song, I'll say it is and afterwards go back stage and wait for the applause before coming back out to play some more songs.
Crowd: (cheers)
JC: Alright, so this is the last song.
Crowd: awwww-rrrrr.....
JC: No no no, that was the last guys.
Crowd: Freebird!
JC: See, you can no longer ironically call out 'Freebird' anymore because it's no longer ironic to ironically say-nevermind. (chuckling)
Crwod: (cheering)
JC: I love that little play we just put on.
And now we are back in our hotel room and I should be sleeping.
Sorry for any typos, it's late. Pictures will be coming soon. Have a great day!
