Here's a quote regarding popularity of Korean dramas abroad that may interest some of you (I know it intrigued me!):In Taiwan, Hong Kong or Bangkok, Seoul seemed modern and hip, and the protagonists of the shows something the young audiences could to aspire to. But Japan is richer than Korea, its technology generally more advanced. Korean television did not take off in Japan because it represented the future; it represented the past. The "pure love" of [Joon Bae-yong]'s drama appeals to older women in Japan, reminding them of the dramas of their youth. It was nostalgia served in twenty one-hour blocks. Somehow Korean dramas had managed to walk two very different sides of the cultural fence, appealing to both the forward-looking and the backward-looking. It was quite a trick.
