I caught up with
Dorm Life, the awesome web series about college students. It's as good as ever. I'll catch up on the bonus webcam thingies later, maybe tomorrow.
Then I marathoned tons of Life S2, maybe the best scripted procedural drama I've watched in ages. For those who've never heard of it, it's about Charlie Crews (Damian Lewis), a cop who went to prison for 12 years for a crime he didn't commit. He gets out, he wins money by sueing the police, but he also gets back to work. His new partner Dani Reese (Sarah Shahi) is reluctant and has her own baggage. As he continues his work as a homicide detective, Crews also pieces together who framed him for the crime that landed him in jail.
Ugh I'm so awkward at summarizing stuff. Whatever. It's a cool show, the crimes are a lot less gimmicky and out of this world than on some shows, but still weird enough to be interesting. The character of Charlie Crews is all zen and quirky; Damian Lewis does a great job, and Reese is just one of the best female cops I've seen on TV, period. A perfect combination of human surface and hard-as-nails, it's just really believable.
The new boss, Tidwell, in S2 is a pretty cool addition, though I think the relative chemistry between him and Reese is super-weird. Like, I kind of ship it but then I'm like, ew, no, anybody but him, come on now. Life is definitely one of those shows that I adore but find it hard to actually ship anything. I dig a lot of the dynamics between characters, like Charlie and Ted, Charlie and Dani, but the only dynamic where I've been like "yes, please be together" is Ted/Olivia. Which is ..kind of odd.
I really like that they didn't/haven't pushed Dani/Charlie as a pairing. As much as I ship people who work together as partners, sometimes it's nice to see a solid female/male friendship/work relationship without any kind of sexual undercurrent. At the same time, I used to think the idea of them ending up together would've been reeeally interesting. Especially at the time when it seemed like they were both pushing away their problems or working through them with meaningless sex. Of course, Charlie's various semi-gold digger young party girl type of hook-ups seemed more harmless than Dani's odd, semi-drunken married guy hook-ups. Maybe that's kind of the point why the dynamic works so well platonically - when there is no sexual attraction between them, neither of them will mess it up by sleeping together. If sex is tied to ultimately not solving anything, then a sexless relationship is more healthy than one where it is a possibility of some sort.
Of course, this season, the situation is a little different. Dani has this odd thing with Tidwell and Charlie's slept with his ex-wife. I wish they'd just get back together. It's clear that it's dawned on her that some outside force came into their lives and tore them apart by framing him and forcing them to be apart for 12 years. But if she's on his side, I feel like she should leave the life she got while he was in prison. Of course, I just remembered she has kids now so it's not that simple but.. uhh. I don't know. I feel uncomfortable whenever people cheat on their spouses - automatic reaction I guess.
But anyway, ACK the ending for 2x09! It's too late to watch another episode and I was going to put the breaks on marathoning this show as it is but ... hmm. Tomorrow, definitely.
