So then later on tonight I fed and watered Sam and had gone back into the living room. Not two minutes later, I heard a lot of flapping and screeching. Thinking he'd fallen, I ran back to the cage to be greeted with a shit load of blood, a madly flapping bird who was trying to gnaw his foot off and...I panicked to be honest.
The blood got even more widespread, I panicked more as Duke chased the panicking bird around...eventually I was able to pick Sam up and hold a towel with styptic powder to his foot after I'd cleaned it off. Then, when the bleeding had slowed down, I was able to take the actual pencil to it. He doesn't seem to have an infection and this time he's managed to keep his remaining toes (he lost a toe in his evil cage of doom several years ago.) He's also not bleeding anymore, is eating his food and said "Thank You" when I put him back into his cage. :) There was also lots of biting from my sweet little evil quaker.
I THINK he bit himself after he got tangled in the seed cup. I'm still trying to figure out how that one actually happened...It looks mostly like he skinned his foot pretty badly, freaked out, and started biting himself. The last time he saw the emergency vet several years ago they did about what we did tonight (not like we have a 24 hour avian vet near here as it IS).
So...tonight I'm going to keep an eye on him and see what things look like in the morning. Let's hope he doesn't decide to gnaw on himself tonight and everything is okay. If he looks bad, I'll definitely find a vet, but I'm hoping it won't be necessary since he seems okay right now. I also think that if it came down to it, I wouldn't choose for a vet to put him under anesthesia due to his advanced age and the fact that he's undersized (he was fed only parakeet seed before the bird rescue got him). I also think it might freak him out more than anything else to have to go. So...we'll see...
I wonder what tomorrow's going to bring. Please no more blood.
...Now he's banging on his seed cup as if what's in there isn't pleasing to him. :)
