Gone Fishin'

OH MY GOD!!!!  OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!  THE BOSTON LEGAL FINALE WAS FUCKING AMAZING!  OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!  So so so so so so so so perfect.  OH MY GOD!  I swear, Boston Legal is one huge romantic comedy of manlove.  THAT ENDING!  OH MY GOD!  THE CHEESINESS!  I LOVE IT!  If this was indeed the series finale, then I am fully satisfied.  But if not, then I'll be happier, because that means more Alan/Denny goodness.  But they ended it in a good place.  At least in regards to Alan/Denny.  The other characters didn't get any closure, but none of them really had any ongoing arcs left anyway, and Alan and Denny are the only ones left from the very first cast, so it makes sense that it would end with them in mind, especially since the show evolved into being about their relationship instead of just Alan and his demons.  Also, I got me some Alan/Jerry interaction too, which made this ep all the more enjoyable.  This episode proves that the show is so much better when Spader is in every single scene.  Seriously.  The man's a god.  Also, Denny was in almost every single scene, too, so just imagine all the things that this episode did to me.  SO MUCH ALAN/DENNY I CAN'T EVEN WRAP MY HEAD AROUND IT!  Their friendship is the most beautiful thing that I have ever seen.  GAH!!!!!  Please tell me that there are men in real life who can be this close to each other?  Please?  Also, there was a lovely little Jerry/Katie moment that sent my heart all aflutter, so I must mention that too.

Gah, where to start?  Like I said, I am so giddy right now and there was SO MUCH Alan/Denny that I can't even think straight.  I know!  How about Alan and Denny jumping around like 13 year old girls over getting accepted into the coast guard?  Bwahahaha, so cute.

But then the drama starts.  Denny being so offended about Alan taking the Concord, Mass. case, and trying to use his power as the name partner of the firm?  Wow.  I don't think he's ever done that to Alan before.  Of course, he knew it wouldn't work, but still.  And his coldness there is killing Alan.  And Alan's just like, "What?  He's choosing to risk our friendship over this?  Seriously?  How dare he think we can't survive this!"  And Denny is all, "I can't believe Alan would do this to me.  Does he even know me at all?"  So, not their first big fight, but it's the first time that Denny has ever truly contemplated dumping Alan, and Alan was very, very confused. :(

The scene where Shirley tells Denny not to go up against Alan because Alan will rip him to shreds.  Alan's face here kills me.  He's so hurt that people think that he'd hurt Denny in order to win, but at the same time, he realizes that he does in fact put his job before his friends (season 3 lashing of Jerry, anyone?).  I love that Denny knew that Alan was eavesdropping.  He is so in tune with Alan that he can feel his presence, or maybe the scent of Alan's cologne drifted to Denny's nose, or... maybe he saw him out of the corner of his eye.  I'm going with the cologne scenerio, because it gives it a gay vibe, and this show is all about gay vibes.

And then the court room scene.  OMG, I LOVE IT WHEN DENNY GETS TO BE HIS BADASS AWESOME SELF!  OMG!  He pwned them all.  I love how proud Alan is of him there.  Despite the bet, despite his need to win (which is basically the driving force of Alan Shore), he is so gob-smackingly happy that his best friend just showed the world how brilliant he still is.  Alan loves it when Denny proves everyone wrong.  Oh, that smile.  So beautiful.  Have I ever mentioned how much I love James Spader?  Because I do.

Now, Alan totally freaking out on Jerry about the whole, "He did surprisingly well for someone who's dying of Alzheimers" thing?  OH MY GOD!!!!!!  Alan doesn't lose his cool very often, but the thought of Denny dying scares the hell out of him and hurts him in ways that nothing else can, and he lashed out at poor Jerry, who was just trying to make conversation and in his own weird way compliment Denny.  Oh, Jerry. :'(  I love how he just ran away.  So freaking adorable.  Then he puts in the wooden cigarette and says that he will not be Alan's whipping boy!  Hee.  But then Alan realizes that he's being insane, and he apologizes to Jerry, but there's very clearly a distance between them that didn't used to be there, and Jerry says this very prolific line about friendships being like a garden that every weekend you realize that you need to tend to it, but you always say, "Oh, I'll wait till next week," and you just keep putting it off, and I got all goosebumpy because it was brilliant and Jerry was just so honest and his eyes were a tad bit glistened and it's just such a tragic moment because it is so very true, and even though Alan started out talking about him and Jerry, his mind went to him and Denny and all the tending that he needed to do.  Alan used to be Jerry's everything, but now, man, the distance is palpable.  The love that used to radiate from Alan just wasn't there (possibly because his mind was on Denny and not Jerry), and Jerry's closest relationship now is with Katie, and he's so much more independent than he was, and it's amazing to see how far Jerry has come.  Anyway, that was a beautiful scene.  And since I'm talking about Jerry, I must mention the bit where he had the cigarette in his mouth and he's being all obnoxious while saying something to Alan, then out of nowhere he says to Katie, "Love the dress.  You could stop traffic today."  OH MY GOD!!!!!  SO ADORABLE!  And it totally threw Katie off.  "Wait, what was that?"  Hee.  Jerry loves her.

And then Denny and Alan ending up personally arguing with each other in court.  SO ADORABLE I CAN'T EVEN... OMG!  They were bickering like an old married couple, and Denny definitely meant to provoke him.  I love that little smile at the end of that scene.  And we see that in fact Denny does know Alan's weaknesses, and he went right for them, while Alan never once took advantage of Denny.

Oh, and the scene where Alan went to apologize to Denny and to try and get on his good side again, but then Denny proclaims that their friendship contained nothing more than the depth of a Scotch... something, I forgot what he called it, but I assumed he meant the glasses that they always drink out of.  Man, I could hear Alan's heart breaking.  Seriously.  Or maybe it was mine.  OH MY GOD, HOW COULD HE SAY THAT?  HOW?

And then the closings.  Oh, Denny.  You look very, very good in that uniform.  Too bad Alan didn't have the same idea.  I loved Denny mocking the length and content of Alan's closings.  That proves that this show knows when it's being ridiculously preachy, but they do it anyway.  So naturally Alan's closing was long and preachy but extremely moving because Spader acts the hell out of those scenes, and Denny listens to the entire thing and actually takes some of it to heart, as opposed to falling asleep like he usually does.  But the closing was Alan's explanation to Denny, and it was beautiful to see how well they understand each other, and how all is forgiven at the end.  Of course, Denny won, so he was in a good mood.  Their little semi embrace, with both of them holding each other's shoulders, if they had been a guy and a girl, there would have been such a hot kiss there, but they're Alan and Denny, so it's just a beautiful moment of friendship, and then the shot of them walking out together arm in arm with Denny in his uniform was so freaking hilarious and so much like a romance film.

That balcony moment was perfect, too.  Once again, they are like this old married couple, Alan basically saying, "How come we never go anywhere anymore?" and Denny saying, "All right, let's go then.  Right now.  We'll share a tent and I'll hold your hand."  And Alan is swept off his feet and they hang the gone fishin' sign on the door and they walk around the city at night with their fishing poles and their coast guard uniforms and a cheesy 80s ballad playing in the background, and we see the empty office and the chairs on the balcony and the sign, and then we see Denny and Alan walking off into the night laughing and being in love.  OH MY GOD!!!!!!  SO FREAKING BEAUTIFUL!  LOVE LOVE LOVE!  BEST ENDING EVER!
Wow.  Do you see now why I loved this ep so much?  OH MY GOD!!!!!!
