Vortex Mashup
A Meditative pattern, July 2015

This pattern combines the best features of Vortex (5), Vortex (6) and Vortex (7) wash cloths and adds the flexibility to make the square as large as you like, even enough for a baby blanket! The instructions are slightly different than in the previous patterns, which helps the final piece lay flatter and minimizes the ridges between sets of triangles.
The pattern is knitted from the center out, beginning with a garter stitch square, and continuing with a series of progressively larger triangles knitted around the base square. The triangles are made with short rows. Each triangle is knitted to the left (counterclockwise) of the previously knitted triangle. Each set of 4 triangles forms a new, larger square (a frame around the previous square) that looks like a tilted box. In each set of triangles, the last one will always require picking up stitches from the garter ridges so that you will be able to knit the next set of triangles. Directions are written out explicitly for the last triangle in each set.
Use double pointed needles (you will need 5) to begin; once the stitch count gets large enough you can switch to a circular needle. Size 6 double pointed needles work well for me with kitchen cotton. It’s important to bind off loosely (I use a size 10 needle to bind off). Bind off after the 8th set of 4 triangles for a wash cloth sized square.
It’s a good idea to make your first Mashup wash cloth with a single kitchen cotton variegated yarn for ease of handling and learning the pattern. The variegated yarn shows off the spinning nature of the pattern.
Next, hone your skills on knitting the sets of 4 triangles in alternating colors to show off the tilting nested boxes pattern. Work alternate sets of triangles in complementary colors to show off the "tilted nested squares".
Afte these, the “path of vortex” is next.  Knit the 1st and 3rd triangles one color, and the 2cd and 4th triangles in a complementary color to create the “path of vortex”, which does look like 4 tornadoes in the wash cloth size. Carry the contrasting color of yarn behind work on every knit through the back loop and on every pick up and knit on the right side.
It’s very helpful to always check to see that you have the proper number of stitches on your needle and the proper number of garter ridges on your newly made triangle. Mistakes will propagate forward and cause the need to rip back a whole set of triangles!

Abbreviations:
S1kw: Slip one stitch knitwise
S1pw: Slip one stitch purlwise
yb: yarn back
tbl: through the back loop
pick up and knit: insert right hand needle under thread in front of next garter ridge bump and pull working yarn through as if to knit
wrap next stitch and turn: slip next stitch purl wise onto your right hand needle, turn work moving yarn around slipped stitch to the back, slip same stitch purl wise back to your (now) right hand needle, and you are ready to knit the next row. This is the same move you use when you wrap a stitch in knitting socks.

Base square
Cast on 4 stitches
Knit 7 rows, slipping the first stitch knit wise.
Pick up 4 stitches along remaining sides of square, using double pointed needles

To make a larger project, continue on in this manner. The following progression will work to extend the pattern for making a baby blanket. Remember that the 4th triangle always has the same number of beginning and ending stitches as the first three triangles of the next set of triangles in the series.
