Got to get to you, but I don't know how

Jesse,

This is one of those "holy crap, Lisa decides to show her vulnerability a bit" moments... Just wanted to say, first, I'm sure you did the right thing in quitting Leadership Team tonight, but the one thing I'm worried about, and have been worried about for a while now for the entire chapter, is that... well, I'm graduating this year, right, and I suck at communicating. One of the things about Leadership Team was that we all built up a friendship, so one of the things I'm worried about with you leaving is... not really losing you as a friend, per se, but not really succeeding at keeping you as one either. I mean, let's face it--neither of us is particularly good about communicating (well, I know I'm not, and it doesn't seem like you are either). Point of this is, can we make sure we still stay friends now that there's one less hang-out time a week?

(that was modified from an actual message I sent him)

I guess I'm just scared. Scared of losing close friends. I mean, he did the right thing, I'm sure, and I don't doubt he considered his decision carefully. But I've lost so many friendships due to a complete lack of communication--on my part in particular--heck, many of you guys are among said lost friends. I don't want to go on being like that. When I graduate, yeah, of course I'll naturally stop talking to some of the friends I've made here. That's life. I can get past that. But all of the people from InterVarsity in general and Leadership Team in particular...

I used to want to be a fortress. I had the personal bubble of Doom. Seriously. I couldn't let anyone be close at all. As Goldman says in The Princess Bride, "Buttercup's heart was a secret garden, and the walls were very high." That description used to be incredibly true. I've kinda gotten over that these past few years. A couple of people have penetrated the defenses.

The thought of losing any of them due to my complete ineptitude at communicating is unbearable...

friendship, scared, intervarsity, jesse, nostos
