I think it's accepted in society because it tells us what is right and what is wrong (The Ten Commandments). It is much like the government's laws. There are some people who follow them, but a minority break them. I think religion is there so that people know how to act to feel safe and to be safe and to live a "wholesome" life and maybe even go to heaven, if there is such a thing.

Has anyone actually noticed that the Old Testament and the New Testament contradict themselves at points? How do we know what is right then? Catholicism is mostly based on the teachings on the Old Testament, maybe because it came first, it has to be right. But what about these "scrolls" that tell us the real Mary Magdalene? To be honest, I believe there was a man named Jesus 2000 odd years ago and he did do good (Life of Brian anyone?)and some people just wanted him to be perfect, not have any flaws and to show he was devoted to his "God", Jewish or Christian, which is why (in their eyes) he should not have a wife and therefor, Mary Magdalene was perceived as a common whore who loved him.
