This morning, I ate a banana while being infinitely distracted by what's "over there". While I don't suppose it was anything particular, I did begin a quiet contemplation of what might be "over there". In photos where the subject does not look at the camera, what is there? Nothing, one will suppose. They are posing for the camera. They want to look like they are thoughtful or occupied. I suppose it makes a person seem more intelligent. Although, to be occupied with nothing at all seems to me a silly thing to be.
Perhaps I'm looking at it in the wrong way. One may be so involved in their activity that they simply ignore the camera (which they are usually holding, but it's the image which matters) to focus on their presumed activity. Or perhaps they are contemplating their next move, like a living game of chess. Am I finished with you, banana? Shall I consume one more bite? Will the world stop and rest on this very decision? Will kittens die and children cry if I take the wrong path? What does the moment after this still-life hold?!
