Saturday Morning Musings

May 17, 2008 08:11

I’m sitting in a stream of dappled sunlight at my dining room table. Ed’s asleep upstairs, the cats are draped on various pieces of furniture, and Mia’s in her highchair next to me, devouring a meal of diced apples and scrambled eggs with dill, garlic powder and mozzarella cheese that she helped me cook. This is a lovely morning.

Yesterday was rather nice, too, at least for a bit. I woke Mia at 6:15 and she was clearly not ready to get up, which is unlike her. I got her changed, got myself ready, and laid down so that she could cuddle with Ed a bit before we left for the day. Once I took her downstairs, I started packing things up and getting everything ready to go, and she trailed after me pitifully, whining and saying “Ma Ma Ma Ma.” So as soon as I could, I sat down on the couch and opened my arms. She came running.

And we proceeded to sit there for a good 20 minutes or so, her cuddled into my chest and dozing, two things she never does anymore. With my sweet little girl curled against me, sleeping softly, relaxing a bit myself, I didn’t care that I was going to be late to work. I didn’t care what other demands I had on my time at that very moment - she was all that mattered to me. It was a nice reminder, a nice little bit of reverie, before she sat up, looked at me, and started babbling. That’s when I knew that she’d had the catnap she needed and was ready to go.

I did get to work late, a combination of my delayed exit from the house and the rain-soaked roads causing drivers to temporarily lose.their.minds. I got on with my day, working on a report that was due, chatting a great deal with Work Wifey, sorting through emails, cleaning out the fridge, chatting more with Work Wifey. It was a laid back kind of day, in true Friday fashion.

My drive home was uneventful, thankfully. I picked Mia up on the early side and we went to the grocery store to get that chore done and out of the way for the weekend. At home I was able to get everything into the house in one load, except Mia, who sat in the car and played while I ran the rest inside. I unloaded and fed her a dinner of shortcuts turkey (on sale at Giant, note to Michelle), diced apples and green beans. She didn’t eat much, but she enjoyed what she did eat.

We then spent a couple of hours playing, reading books, cuddling, and, on her part, whining. She was tired and out-of-sorts. She’d felt warm that morning, felt a little warm to her daycare provider, and still felt warm that evening. I checked for teeth buds, since she’s been stalled at seven for awhile now, but found nothing. Other than the low-grade fever and a bit of whining, she seems to be okay, so I’m not terribly concerned.

Ed got home just in time for bedtime routine and kindly took care of it. I got her dosed up with a little Tylenol to help with the fever, and she went down easily for the night.

Ed came back down to join me for pizza-and-a-movie night and since it was his choice this week, we watched Se7en. And by we watched, I mean he watched, and I fiddled. We ordered pizza in from Papa John’s and just relaxed. Once the movie was through I went upstairs, read a little more of Second Chance, and went to bed. Mia woke fussing around 11, but I waited it out and she went back to sleep.

She started hollering from her crib around 7 this morning and Ed sleepily asked if I wanted to “wait the five minutes” or have him take her downstairs. The “wait the five minutes” technique is for middle-of-the-night wakes, not morning wake-up, but I didn’t bother trying to explain that one to him at that point. He was completely out of it, which is probably why he even asked that in the first place.

Mia and I came downstairs, she had a few ounces of milk and cuddled with me on the couch again. She still feels a bit warm and had trouble getting good and awake again, which is rather unlike her still. She’s usually right up-and-at-‘em. But after some cuddle and some moo juice, she was fine. I think she’s just about done eating now, judging by the array of egg and apple on the floor under her highchair.

She’ll likely go down for a nap in an hour or so, and I’m considering going down with her. We don’t need to leave here until about 2:45 this afternoon and my Mom’s asked about keeping Mia overnight and bringing her home tomorrow. We’ll see.

I sure do love this little girl. She’s so perfect.
