I can share what's been working for me; I've lost about 25 pounds since the beginning of last school year when I started making an effort to lose weight.

I restricted my calories to about 1300 a day (1700 when I had my period. Make sure you eat a little more then, otherwise you'll really feel like crap.) I made sure to eat high fiber foods (keeps you full) and well balanced meals. A good way to do that is to make sure what you're eating is very colorful. The more colors you see, the more different kinds of nutrients you're getting. Lean protein is good as well; things like salmon, tuna fish, and chicken. You should probably stay away from beef mostly, but having it once in a while isn't too bad. Drinking water is one of the best things you can do, especially if you drink a lot of soda. Just cutting out soda can help you lose a few pounds.

In the exercise department, cardio is your friend. Walking is good, but running is better. I try to go to the gym every morning before work for at least 30 minutes. I've also been lifting weights, but that's for toning purposes, not weight loss.

Good luck with your goal! I've been working at losing weight for a while, but I have to maintain now so that my wedding dress fits in August... :P A good resource for calculating your personal nutritional needs without having to go to the doctor is: www.mypyramid.gov. I found it very helpful.
