[ Up on the board, in rather large letters, are the words: ]

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

JOHN LENNON

WAS BORN

"GIVE PEACE A CHANCE"

I'm not sure how many of you have listened to any song by The Beatles, or if there is anyone here who hasn't even heard of them. [ Points to board. ] This man, John Lennon, idolized by many, hated by just as much, was one of the founders of the band. And today happens to be the anniversary of his birthday.

Why is it special? Why do we even care if it's related to History? Because he was one of the prominent figures who set the wheels of change in motion in the '60's and '70s. Now, on your desks are copies of the lyrics to Give Peace a Chance, a song written by him and released in 1969 during his Honeymoon Bed-in. I want you to read the lyrics given to you, use any reliable resource you need for it [ points to the computers and the mini library of History-related material around them ] and analyze it. Why does he refers to certain words and phrases? People and personalities? What do they stand for? Think about the many conflicts, the many movements that were in place at the time. Think about the Vietnam war, the role of the United Nations in what was going on at the time. Think about the riots that were taking place all over the world.

Give Peace a Chance was sung as an 'anthem' during the American Anti-War movement. Why do you suppose it was so popular, so well liked by the public involved in the movement at the time?

And finally, include in your essay, whether or not you believe there will be a day when World Peace becomes a reality. Why or why not. Be as detailed as you can.

In the mean time, have a listen to the song you will be writing on.  [ He turns on the CD player and this starts to play. ]
