My internet has been a little wacky for the past couple of weeks... I haven't seen any new LJ updates or new e-mails... but I think it has something to do with my browser (mozilla firefox) and not the internet itself. Hopefully this problem will resolve itself, because I just don't feel like taking on any additional responsibility.
Finals are happening the next two weeks... I cannot wait a moment longer for school to get out. The first year was a nice ride, but I want to get out of the dorms and HAGS, if you remember your middleschool yearbook lingo.
My boss, Johnny, got fired. Good riddence to bad, coked-up bosses. He was an irate asshole. My new boss is Chance O'Brien. His signature is on my paychecks... he and his brother co-founded Gumby's pizza in Gainsville, FL. Almost as soon as he arrived, everything was getting better. Here's why:
1: He's NICE. He's, from what I can tell, a pretty good Christian, which is odd because he hires and manages pot smokers and drug addicts (i.e. Johnny, my ex-boss). In the 5 shifts I have worked since he started here, he has not yelled at a single person... highly uncommonly good.
2: He's EFFICIENT/GO-GETTER-ESQUE. After discovering we ran out of Ken's Steakhouse brand ranch cups to hand out with our cheese sticks (Pokey Stix, for you Gumby's patrons), he ran out to Sam's Club, bought 5 gallons worth of ranch, and told us to start making ranch cups (in the same fashion we make pizza sauce cups). It turns out they only cost about a nickel to make whereas the Ken's Steakhouse cups cost nearly fifty cents a pop. Johnny had neither the initiative nor the concern to deal with such a problem. In addition, he made up some new drink specials for our bar and made box-toppers for them THE SAME NIGHT at Kinko's. He also added new coupons/deals to compete with the other, larger pizza delivery chains... we can now hold a candle to Domino's 5-5-5 deal, etc.
3: HE ACTUALLY WORKS. Johnny would come in once... maybe twice a week for about 2 hours each day. Every shift I have worked since Chance got here, he has been there side by side, pounding out pizzas and answering phones. He's a real stand-up guy who is not afraid to actually get his hands dirty.
That's why Chance is such an awesome boss... and those were just a few reasons I care to mention. He has actually done a lot more for me on a personal level, but I don't want you to walk away from this entry thinking that Gumby's has consumed my life, even though it more or less has.
...
I was coming back inside about fifteen minutes ago, and I heard the birds chirping. Such is not uncommon for me to hear, as I have heard them start their songs hours before daylight when I would get out of work after a night shift. I find it one of the most beautiful things I have discovered thus far at UGA. Others find it weird, odd, or just disturbing, which is total bunk. I said, in a very dramatic voice, to my fellow smokers as I was walking into the lobby "Listen to the birds and their songs, for you may never notice them again."
Because when the totallity of your life is weighed and measured, and all that you have seen and heard is laid plain, the good things will count equally with the bad things, and at that point, you will discover truly how beautiful this world really is.
Peace out, y'all.
