He doesn't seem to want power for the sake of it; I think he wants power because he thinks he can help, or more accurately, fix things with it. Now, I've been thinking of the confession scene in AOTC scene, particularily when Anakin said "Obi Wan is jealous! He's holding me back!" First off, I don't see Anakin's complaints as whining. I know it's early in the morning, but I have to post this. It makes too much sense. Anakin, for all his arrogance, doesn't really love himself. All his pride is false.
