 Happy birthday, Oromin!

Labor Day weekend has been really rather uneventful. From my perspective and with my school schedule, it and Memorial Day have to be the most worthlessly timed holidays on the calendar. With the first, I have been in school all of seven days and do not in any way, shape, or form need a break, and in fact rather resented it since I was getting bored enough with summer at the end. With the latter, my school ridiculously does not let out until after labor day and so, depending on the year, and left with about the same number of days after the holiday, sometimes as few as four (usually ending on a Friday, but not always, I don't think).

So I did homework today (which easily could have been done earlier), cleaned my room (which probably would not have otherwise been done, although the mess was getting to me), and worked on college applications some more (which also could have been done earlier). And read. Quite a lot. I finished The Stand on Saturday and in the intervening time have read all of Pride and Prejudice (for the third time). (Despite having other books due back at the library in about a week.) It got me thinking about what the number of rereadings will tell you about a person's favorite books... Lord of the Rings is easily at the top of the list, but I was surprised to realize that next came the 5th Harry Potter book with I think five readings (the first four I counted at four readings each, the sixth at three, and the seventh at one - a credit to times when I don't know what else new to read and don't have the time or inclination to peruse the bookshelves of the library). The Hobbit is up there... I think three and a half (started to read it and never finished), as is the Sil (3?). P&P obviously now with 3. And there are numerous, numerous books I have read twice - some of the Narnia books, Shadow of the Wind, White Fang, Tom Sawyer, UT, The Giver, Eragon - but this principally because of the movie, the first two Dune books, but only because I never got around to the third the first time through, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, Lord of the Flies, The Once and Future King, and others that I don't own and don't remember. (As well as books that I read twice or more times for the last time several years ago that no longer have any interest whatsoever to me.)

And reflecting on this list of books, most of them make it on to my "favorite books" list, and few of the books on said list have only been read once (and a couple of those have been read recently). The list I put on my facebook, for reference, is thus:
Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, Harry Potter, To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies, Narnia books, Pride and Prejudice, The Giver, White Fang, The Once and Future King, Ender's Game series, Shadow of the Wind, Dune, Gone with the Wind, Tom Sawyer, anything by Frank Peretti, The Beekeeper's Apprentice and the rest of the Mary Russell series, the Bible. And in the case of the Bible, while I have not read the entire thing twice, I have read several of the books in it twice (or more), although I do not intend to endeavor Leviticus, say, again anytime soon.
