Inara found Kaylee polishing a wrench. Inara tongued the corner of her scarf, and polished the tip of the mechanic's nose.
"I want to finish work lookin' like you," Kaylee said.
"We could trade."
"Really!?"
"Strangers will fight over you, while the man you're with will escalate rather than leave," Inara said factually.
"How exciting!" Kaylee beamed.
"When his time comes, baby..." Inara paused, because Simon was walking toward them with his head in a book.
The women made room. "Hello, Inara. Thank you. Hello," he said, without identifying Kaylee. He jotted a note, and walked past. Kaylee looked hurt.
