Injustice

I understand why the Oakland community is upset. I understand how they see it as a white officer unfairly killing a black man.

But the violence in the streets, that is what I don't understand. Burning parked cars, smashing store windows - that only hurts the community they're trying to speak up for and protect.

The video footage of the shooting is disturbing, and frankly, I wish I hadn't watched it on the news. It's so unsettling to hear that shot and know that it ended someone's life. Oscar Grant was handcuffed on the ground and died unjustly. There's no doubt about that. Though after having seen the video, I really don't believe the officer did it deliberately. I think there was a misfire, or he thought it was a taser or something. Not that it excuses anything, he deserves to be punished.

I just wish people would wait for the facts. I realize that's impossible in situations like this. It's easier for the city council members to call it an execution to show the masses they're empathetic. It's easier for people to protest in the streets, beat up police cars, set dumpsters on fire in anger.

I hope justice comes swiftly. Oakland has been through enough.
