G-20 Summit "Protests" Pictures

Sep 24, 2009 21:42

Most of the day was actually really boring. Pittsburgh was definitely very "quiet" today, and as the news has been reporting, we've more or less become a temporary "military state" with state troopers at every block and most of the roads either blocked off entirely by police or directed elsewhere. I didn't actually see any riot police or any gatherings until 5 pm, when I was going out to dinner with
and_zero and
bluemoon_991.

A mob of 99% college kids and only 20 protestors (lame) gathered between the campuses of U.Pitt and CMU around that time because everyone realized that the dignitaries were already here. Everyone was mainly just standing around, taking pictures of the police (or themselves) and craning their neck to see if we could even see any of the vehicles the dignitaries used. Once nightfall came around, though, the mob was pretty darn big and the state police obviously didn't like it. They charged at us a few times in full riot gears with batons, so I bolted out of there and decided that I really, really didn't want to be caught up in anything.

Most of the following pics were taken from 5-8 pm when the mob swelled from a hundred or so to probably close to a thousand. (I think. I'm pretty blind at night, but it sure seemed like a WHOLE lot of people.)

As far as I know, no one got hurt. The police DID charge at us one or two times, which invoked a lot of stampeding. That was TERRIFYING to get caught up in because there were just people screaming and running in the opposite direction even though none of us knew where to go or what was even going on. .___.

A  TON  OF  POLICE!  O_O

Mob of 99%  college kids (mainly U.Pitt, but some Carnegie Mellon students as well.

Everyone was being tourist-y, so what the hell.

Harmless protesting. I  love the random nonsense signs the college kids brought with them or made on the spot.

O_O This did terrify me a bit, I'll admit.

I left around here because the police pulled out their batons and shields and I  had a feeling they were going to charge at us again. :/ C'mon, we're just curious, harmless college kids with cameras! DDDD:

I do have some rather freaky videos on my camera, including the police issuing a threat through a bullhorn and a bus full of more fully-dressed riot police appearing at the scene. O_o;
