This makes me so, so sad.
For 12 years, scientists have caught the sound of one lone, unknown whale whose migration pattern and sound doesn't fit the pattern of any known whale species. The sounds have been deepening as the years go on, which scientists assume mean that the individual getting older. However, it seems to be calling out for it's own kind, and it has never gotten a response. I can't imagine how lonely that is. If you listen to its call, it's just really... haunting. It also sounds forced, like it's trying to call out but can't get as loud as it wants to.
I agree with some of the comments though, scientists should investigate this instead of sitting by and going "oh, poor whale". I don't mean necessarily that they should fool it into thinking that it's not alone by copying it's sound back at it, but at the very least, they should at least try to find the thing so they can look at it. (I'm tempted to agree that maybe something's wrong with its vocal chords or mental capacity or its call, so that's why none of the other whales have answered.) It'd be a huge assumption to say that it was the last of it's kind because it had to have had parents somehow. We've also been recording whale species for at least a few decades and they're rather hard to miss due to their size, so I don't know why it would be all alone. D:
