Fi's Rec List

Terribly overdue, but Costume Con really ate up a lot of my fic-reading time this last couple of months.

Safe Distance by merripestin (115k, rated Explicit, John/Sherlock)

Summary: The mother was apparently poisoned, the son seems to have killed himself playing Russian roulette. It's a murder and a suicide. Or is it a suicide and a murder? At least the case is distracting John from the fact that sex with Sherlock was probably a mistake right from the start. John will learn to cope, one way or another.

My thoughts: I love the observations the author makes and has John and Sherlock make about each other. Not your usual "sexual identity crisis" sort of fic, because both of them are having their own issues, but trying to keep it under the surface. So you get all these double layers to every interaction and it just rolls like waves.

The Time Traveler's Flatmate by agameofscones (orithea) - (series, 65k, rated E, John/Sherlock)

Author's Summary: Sherlock Holmes suffers from Chrono-Displacement: simply put, he time travels unpredictably, against his will. John Watson lives his life the normal way. Or as normal as it can possibly be considering that he first meets Sherlock at the age of six.

My thoughts: A fantastic story. The timeline is of course a little wonky, but not confusingly so. There's kind of this overwhelming calm from John 'waiting' for things to happen that he knows will, someday. And then ending. THE ENDING! OMG, just typing it makes want to hop up and down in my seat. Go. Read this. NOW!

More Than Nothing by Qalets - (14k, rated Mature, John/Sherlock)

Summary: Of tea and conversation. Post Reichenbach. Two post-ex-best-friends dissect, disassemble, explain, articulate, confuse and connect.

My thoughts: A really well-presented reunion with the kind of details that just suck you in and sit you right down in the middle of the conversation. And SO much conversation. The author really did not make this an easy fix at all and I loved it.

Synthesis by lapotter - (40k, rated Explicit, John/Sherlock)

Author's Summary:
syn·the·sis [sin-thuh-sis] /ˈsɪnθəsɪs/ noun, plural syn·the·ses.
1. the combining of the constituent elements of separate material or abstract entities into a single or unified entity ( opposed to analysis, ) the separating of any material or abstract entity into its constituent elements.
2. a complex whole formed by combining.
a·pha·sia [uh-fey-zhuh] /əˈfeɪʒə/ noun.
1. the loss of a previously held ability to speak or understand spoken or written language, due to disease or injury of the brain.

My thoughts: I love a good character study where the author takes characters that we know so well and tries to develop how they'd react under a completely new set of challenges. This fic does so brilliantly. So many times I found myself saying "that right there. that is EXACTLY how John would react." Also, hello surprise casefic seamlessly woven into this hurt/comfort-developing relationship-character study.

recs, sherlock
