Chapter One: A Gesture
Taking a deep, shuddering breath, I knocked on the door. I waited for about a minute, but there was no reply.
Sighing, I knocked again, louder this time.
“Who is it?” called Kurt’s voice from the other side of the door. He sounded very annoyed, which only made this much harder for me than it already was.
“Uh….it-its…” I cleared my throat, thinking come on, dude, you can do this!
After a moment I opened my mouth, hoping to sound confident, but for all the effort that took it just came out croaky like what I’d expect a frog to sound like if they could talk.
“He-hey, Kurt, its Finn….c-can I come in?” I said (in my frog-voice, remember).
For a moment there was silence. It was awkward. I shifted my weight uncomfortably, my teeth chattering with the nerves.
Finally - and so quietly that I probably wouldn’t have noticed if I hadn’t been having a staring competition with the door - the door opened and there he was.
He looked at my silently, without saying a word, and opened the door fully to let me inside. I followed him inside, stopping to stand just inside the door as Kurt went and sat down on his bed, not looking at me.
It was very quiet. I wasn’t sure whether I was meant to talk next (was it his turn because he hadn’t said anything yet?) but then I just thought I had to say something if there was ever going to be some noise in this room.
“So… Kurt, how are you?” I asked him quietly, watching him respond to my voice (he just continued to look anywhere but at me, but I did notice his fists clench a little bit, which made me nervous all over again.)
After a moment, Kurt shrugged for an answer.
I sighed, but tried to keep the situation upbeat. “Oh, cool. Well… that’s good, I guess… I’m good, too, thanks for asking. I - “
But before I could start saying something else, Kurt mumbled, “What are you doing here, Finn?”
I frowned. “Uh… well… it’s Friday. I always come on Fridays… you know, with mum… our weekly dinner, you know…?”
Kurt huffed and finally looked up at Finn. “No… I mean, what are you doing in here? In my room?” He glared at Finn before looking away again.
I blinked. “Well… you let me in…” I said, matter-of-factly.
Kurt drew in a breath and let it out. “No, Finn. I know that. What I want to know is why you come down here in the first place. You never do, so why start now? I was quite enjoying the pleasures of not having annoying, dimwitted boys in my room, so please, don’t stop.”
I stared at Kurt for a moment. Man, he was angry at me. And I didn’t really know what I’d done. But I was so going to fix it.
“Oh,” I said, quietly. “You’re right, Kurt. I’m sorry.”
Kurt just looked at me. I looked at him. We looked at each other.
Then Kurt said, “So?” looking at me, impatiently.
“Oh, right,” I said, turning red. Here goes nothing.
I walked cautiously towards Kurt before opening my mouth again. “See… Kurt… the reason I’m down here is… is because I wanted to ask you a favour.”
Kurt raised his eyebrows at me. “A favour? Surely I don’t owe you anything. I should be the one asking you for favours, don’t you think?
My blood boiled for a moment but I couldn’t get angry. Kurt was still angry at me, after all this time, and I was going to do anything I could to make it better.
So I just nodded and smiled at him. “Yes, of course, you’re right about that Kurt… but, umm… you won’t be disappointed. This is for a very good cause, I promise.”
Kurt stared at me intently for a moment before saying. “Okay… what’s the deal?”
Now for the hard part. And before I could think to process the words properly, I blurted out, “can I borrow your baby, I mean, your car?”
Kurt looked away. “No, you cannot,” he said without hesitation.
“Aww… Kurt, why not? Please? Nothing will happen, I’ll keep good care of her!” Great, now I sounded like a whining baby.
But maybe that wasn’t such a bad thing because for a split second I thought I saw the slightest crack of a smile on Kurt’s face. Which was saying something because Kurt hasn’t smiled at something I’d said for weeks and weeks, and trust me, I’ve tried to make him so many times I’ve lost count.
In an instant though, the smile was gone, and Kurt was looking back at me, leaning back on his bed and studying me. It was quite a sex -
Oh, no, I did not almost think that did I?
Clearing my throat, I looked back at Kurt, who was still watching me intently.
“What do you need to borrow my baby for?” Kurt spoke finally.
Oh, damn. I don’t really have an answer for that. Think, Finn, think!
“Uh… it’s a surprise!” I blurted out.
Kurt raised his eyebrows, straightening up and leaning closer towards.
God, somehow that's even sex -
Err…
Hoping Kurt didn’t notice my red face, I quickly tuned in so I heard what he had to say.
“A surprise, you say?” Kurt said. “Who or what for?” he asked curiously.
“Uh… that’s a… that’s a surprise, too,” I mumbled.
Kurt watched me for a moment and then stood up and shrugged his shoulders. “This doesn’t mean that I like you again, okay, Finn? You can borrow my baby, just because I’m intrigued by whatever surprise you have install for us all,” he drawled before moving over to his door were he gently un-hooked his car keys from the hook in the wall.
“Thanks, Kurt!” I said, walking over to him as he handed out his key for me to take. Without thinking, I happily grabbed the key and reached over to put a hand on Kurt’s arm.
It was just a thank you gesture, but as soon as I did it, Kurt stepped quickly away and looked intently in the other direction.
I sighed, unhappily, before saying quietly, “I really appreciate this, Kurt. I won’t be long, okay? Your baby will be fine.”
Kurt didn’t reply.
I left the room.
~
Sitting in Kurt’s car in the garage, before I started the engine, a voice inside my head said You wish you were Kurt’s baby, don’t you?
I blushed and almost nodded before coming back to my senses and shaking my head frantically. No, man, don’t think stuff like that!
I was Rachel’s baby. And that was going to have to do because that was all I was ever going to be. And I was happy about that, I was!
I sighed. I just wanted Kurt and I to be friends again. He was important to me. I’d stuffed everything up between us, but I was going to make it up to Kurt, starting now.
You see, I have a plan.
The reason I wanted to borrow Kurt’s car (besides the fact that I don’t have my own and despite the fact that my Mum’s car gave me nightmares of the mailman) is this:
1. I am going to drive down to the shops,
2. Then I am going to park the car as close as possible to the corner of Hamilton St (which is pretty hard but hopefully I can manage), then
3. After parking I’m going to get out of the car and walk towards the Organic Fruit Shop (I never knew there was one but Kurt’s always talking about it), then
4. In the Organic Fruit Shop I am going to buy a big basket of Organic Peaches (which are Kurt’s favourites. I always see him eating them and even though he snapped when I asked him about them, he still told me everything he loved about them and where you could buy them), and then
5. After I pay the register dude, I’m going to walk over to the gift-wrapping place and get them to wrap the peaches up in the basket like a giant, green lollipop with blue ribbons and,
6. Then I’m going to buy a card and write ‘I hope this cheers you up. Love, Finn’ on it and,
7. Then I’m going to attach the card to the basket and,
8. Then I’m going to pay the register dude and,
9. Then I’m going to leave the shop and walk over to Kurt’s car and then get in and drive back to Kurt.
10. And then I am going to rush down to Kurt’s room and present him with the present and he’ll smile at me and give me a hug and we’ll be friends again and we’ll sit up all night eating peaches because they are really yummy.
That’s what I’d planned in my head, but things do not turn out quite the same.
Here is what actually happens. Be warned, it’s really very sad:
1. I drive down to the shops (which is fine because I am a good driver, okay?)
2. I try to get a car park on the corner of Hamilton St, but there is none and I drive around for ages until I find the only car-park available which is like 3 blocks away from where I wanted to be so I have to walk all the way there from the car.
3. I finally arrive at the Organic Fruit Shop and its open, so that’s good.
4. I walk into the Organic Fruit Shop and look around but there’s hardly any fruit in there because, I guess, it’s nearing the end of the day.
5. I buy one Peach because that’s all they have left.
6. I pay the register dude, who looks angry that I’m only buying one peach. I guess that he wants to eat it because they are so yummy.
7. I leave the shop and walk over towards the gift-wrapping place but its shut and I shout “what the hell, are you serious!” before stomping off towards Kurt’s car with the single peach.
8. I get into Kurt’s car and look around in there for bits of paper. I find a small bit of card in the glove compartment and I hastily write, “I’m sorry. This was going to be better. Love, Finn” on it. I don’t find anything to wrap the peach in so I just leave it in its paper bag and slip the note inside.
9. I sigh and start the car, wishing I wasn’t so stupid as to think about closing times and times when shops aren’t going to be full of yummy fruit anymore.
10. I drive slowly out of the car park and head back home. I’m really annoyed at myself so maybe I’m not concentrating enough on what’s going, but I am trying hard not to hit any mailman’s, but then I guess I could try hard to make sure something didn’t hit me.
11. I get hit by another car. It’s a fender-bender. The car lurches and it’s really scary and it feels like an earthquake.
12. The other guy is probably drunk, but I can’t really see him very well.
13. I start to hurt really bad all over, especially in my legs and shoulders but all I can think is that I stuffed up big time and Kurt was going to hate me forever for ruining his car and I wasn’t going to be making up with him anymore and we weren’t going to be eating peaches all night because they were really yummy.
