-----------------------------------------------------
It was quiet in the library. Kurt wouldn’t usually go there, but today he wanted nothing better than to be alone. So he sat in the library, pretending to read a book and mulling over the events of the past week.
Ever since Sam had joined Glee Club, Kurt felt like his life was a downward spiral of happiness and misgivings. The Duet assignment could have been a brilliant time in Kurt’s life, had he been able to sing alongside that cute blond, but… thanks to Finn, and his father to some extent, he know knew it probably hadn’t been a good idea. So, the day before, he had graciously let Sam off the hook, because he could at least understand that he might ruin his reputation.
The funny thing was that Sam had never seemed weird about pairing up with him, unless you counted the way he was confused as to why Kurt had approached him in the showers. No, Kurt could tell that Sam had been excited by how talented Kurt was and would have surely sang with him if it hadn’t been for Kurt letting it go.
Kurt sighed and rubbed his eyes. He supposed Finn was right in talking to him about it. It really hadn’t been any of Finn’s business, but he could definitely see the logic in it so he had given up on being angry at Finn. Well, no angrier than usual, because, really, it wasn’t as if they were the best of chums at the moment.
Seriously, Finn was driving Kurt up the wall! Why couldn’t Finn just leave him alone? Why couldn’t he get the hint that Kurt didn’t want to talk to him, didn’t want to have anything to do with him until… well, until his feelings were completely gone.
When Finn had worn that shower curtain and stood up for him against those dumb Nethandrals, Kurt had immediately felt something come back to him. He had basically lost it all after Finn had called him that word, but as soon as Finn did something nice… well, Kurt was right back on the wagon.
It was maddening! Why did he have to feel this way about Finn? Why was it so hard to get it to go away? Just one lopsided smile from Finn or one touch on the arm (that he had to immediately shake off, of course) he would be reminded of all the reasons why he had ever fallen for Finn in the first place.
But Finn was straight and completely gaga for Rachel. Anyone could see that. So, Kurt was working extra hard to be cold towards Finn and he hoped that that would work to get Finn off his back so he could slowly get over him… but it just wasn’t working, because Finn just kept coming back for more, trying to make it up to Kurt and trying to be his friend.
Kurt groaned. He was pretty sure he could never be Finn’s friend. Finn had hurt him so much and it was so hard to get over that. All he really wanted was to be closer to Finn again, but he knew he couldn’t because that would just make everything so much worse.
But anyway, at least Finn had helped with Kurt not getting lost in love over some other straight quarterback (though he was still unsure as to whether Sam was really straight) and Kurt knew now that he was just as good alone as a couple was together. He had to believe that, because that was all he was going to get.
~
Awhile later, Kurt left the library and walked into the crowds of students in the corridors. It was still lunch time and the corridor was deafening after the quite solitude of the library.
As Kurt walked towards his locker, he noticed a classroom door was open and could see two blond haired figures standing in there, one ruffling his hair awkwardly and the other with her hands on her hips. Kurt glanced around and quickly sidled up towards the classroom door, leaning up against it and trying to hear what Sam and Quinn were saying.
“… So you just dumped Kurt for no reason?” Quinn was asking, sounding a little accusatory. Kurt and Quinn had become sort of friends over the summer, so it didn’t faze Kurt that she was standing up for him.
“What?” Sam said, sounding confused. “No! That’s what you think?”
“Yes, what’s the other option? I’m pretty sure Kurt would have died just to sing with you, you being the new guy, and all,” Quinn replied.
“Well actually…. It was Kurt that blew me off. He decided he’d rather sing with someone else more talented or something… it’s a shame, he has a good voice and I was looking forward to singing with him.”
There was a pause.
“Oh,” Quinn said after a moment, “so you don’t have a problem with him being gay?”
“Nah,” Sam said, sounding carefree. There was another pause, “but you know, I know that most people around here have problems with gays and Finn kept telling me it was a death sentence to do a duet with Kurt, but I didn’t really listen. Anyway, it’s all probably for the best. I’ve heard that you’re a pretty good singer…”
Kurt didn’t listen to anymore. Blood boiling in anger, he sprinted away from the classroom in search of Finn. He knew he was meant to be going to class, but this just couldn’t wait!
As Kurt ran through the school, students looked back at him, but he paid no notice to them. He was so intent of running as fast as he could, that he almost ran passed Finn, who was sitting quietly on a bench out the front of the school.
Panting loudly, Kurt skidded to a halt, spun around and charged right over towards Finn. Finn barely had a chance to look up with his usual confused expression, before Kurt flung himself at him and slapped him the face.
“WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE, FINN?” Kurt yelled angrily, before slapping Finn’s face a second time.
Finn blinked rapidly and brought his hand up to cup his cheek.
“Oww!” he mumbled before quickly grabbing Kurt’s hands as they came down to slap him again. “What are you going, Kurt?” Finn asked angrily, “that really hurt!
“Well, I’d hope so, seeing as that was my intention,” Kurt snapped, glaring at Finn and trying to wriggle his hands free. But Finn’s grasp was too strong.
“Well, congratulations,” Finn said, wincing, and glaring right back at Kurt.
Kurt snorted and snatched his hands out of Finn’s in one quick step back that Finn was too slow for. Quickly Finn put his arms up over his face and cowered back, his eyes looking uncertainly at Kurt through the gap in his arms.
Kurt glared at him in rage but when Kurt didn’t make to slap him again, Finn lowered his arms slowly, all the while peering at Kurt cautiously.
Kurt didn’t move. He just stood there staring Finn down and it was awhile before either of them spoke, both locked in what could have been a staring competition in other circumstances.
Eventually Finn sighed and asked quietly, “why did you do that, Kurt? Are you okay?” He sounded hurt, but compassion wasn’t in Kurt’s hindsight at the moment.
“No, I’m NOT okay!” Kurt snapped, crossing his arms.
Finn waited but when Kurt didn’t say anything else, he asked slowly, “Okay… then what’s a matter?”
“YOU!” You’re what’s a matter!” Kurt said angrily.
Finn groaned. “Well, I guessed that… seeing as you were just slapping me. I’m not so stupid as to be unresponsive to some pretty powerful slaps.” He smiled weakly but Kurt’s face didn’t change.
“You’re a complete idiot, Finn! That’s what’s wrong! I could understand when you had a go at me for wanting to do a duet with Sam, but I’m sorry, I can’t quite forgive you for going off to Sam, trying to convince him that I’m a lousy partner who would send him into a DEATH SENTENCE!” Kurt yelled the last part, breathing heavily, before flopping down onto the grass in front of Finn.
Finn lurched back at Kurt’s sudden movement, but when he realised Kurt wasn’t going to slap him again, he leant down towards Kurt.
“Kurt… I’m sorry… but you’re taking this the wrong way… that’s not what I meant,” he said, quietly.
Kurt didn’t reply. He just sat there, looking anywhere but at Finn, a scowl still plastered to his face.
Finn sighed. “Look, Kurt… I was just trying to help Sam… I don’t want him to get bullied or something… I know what it’s like to get bullied for being gay… Azimio and Karowsky thought I was gay just by living with you last year… I mean… you know that I don’t have anything against gays… I’ve told you that, like, countless times!”
Finn was starting to sound angrier and angrier as he kept talking, but still Kurt didn’t spare him a glance.
Finn breathed in before he started to talk again, his voice low. “Kurt… I don’t think you’re lousy… I just… I just think you deserve better than Sam.”
This got Kurt’s attention. His head whipped towards Finn, his eyes still glaring and his mouth twisted in a scowl. “Oh really? And where on earth is there anyone else, Finn? Huh? Just tell me that! Because I’m pretty sure there isn’t anyone else around here!”
Finn stared at Kurt, looking hurt before he said quickly, “but… you don’t even know that Sam’s like you… from what I can see, he’s straight. He’s just like - “
“I don’t know, but he’s sure as hell gayer than any other guy I’ve met around here. He dyes his hair for god sakes! That is so not real blond hair, I would know,” Kurt snapped.
“Alright, Sam’s gay then!” Finn snapped back. “Whatever! The point is, just because there’s some new gay around… that doesn’t mean he’s good enough for you.”
“What do you mean, good enough for me? “Good enough for me” is a fairy tale, Finn. There IS no one! I’m better off alone.”
Finn opened his mouth but snapped it shut, not saying anything. There was silence for a moment as they both stared off into different directions before Finn mumbled, “Kurt… Kurt… there is someone out there for you and I know - “
But Kurt cut him off before he could finish what he was saying, as if he wasn’t even listening. “You know what really upsets me about this is that you just HAD to go and talk to Sam about it! I mean, I was okay with you asking me to stop, I got over that, it was… reasonable… but then you go behind my back as if you thought I wasn’t going to listen to you and try to get Sam against me, too and - “
“Wow, hold up!” Finn said loudly, putting his hands out. “Kurt, what do you mean? I’m not against you… I wasn’t… that’s not what I meant… and you know it! I was just trying to help Sam! We need him for nationals.”
“That’s all you people care about!” Kurt snapped angrily. “Nationals, Nationals, NATIONALS! What about me? Did you spare me a thought?”
Finn frowned. “Huh?” he mumbled, blinking. “Don’t you care about Nationals, Kurt?”
Kurt sighed in exasperation. “Yes, I do, but it’s not the end of the world if we lose is it? I mean, I get it, but didn’t you even think about what this was doing to me?”
“Of course I did!” Finn snapped, leaning closer towards Kurt and looking him straight in the eye. “But, Kurt, I really didn’t think that Sam was gay… and I didn’t want you to get hurt… so I thought it was for the best.”
“Oh, so you did it because you didn’t want me to pine all over Sam like I pined for you all last year?” Kurt asked, daringly.
Finn spluttered and turned a little red. “Umm… yes… especially because Sam isn’t worth… he’s not worth your attention.”
Kurt stood up, steaming. “Oh, and you were?”
Finn stared at Kurt and shrugged. “Umm… yes? I mean there must be something good about me if you liked me for so long…”
Kurt drew in a breath. “You… you’re… oh, just get over yourself, Finn!”
Finn blinked. “Huh?”
"You’re not everything in the world, you know, Finn. I mean, sure, maybe I used to think so, but then you drew my head out of the water that day in my basement and I knew how wrong I was!”
Finn stared at Kurt, his face turning pale. “What? I thought… I thought we were passed that… I thought you still….” Finn trailed off and looked away.
Kurt stared and blurted, “what? You thought I was still in love with you? Well… well, I’m NOT, so just get off your high horse and - “
Finn slumped forwards in his seat, putting his hands in his arms.
Kurt faltered for a second, but then continued on his rant. “You know what you’re problem is, Finn? You just expect everyone to love you forever! But they just don’t because even though you’re sweet and cute, you’re also a complete idiot and you don’t know how to deal with people! I mean, you’ve been so mean to me and I am just so sick of your attitude!"
Finn’s head whipped up sharply. “You’re sick of MY attitude?” Finn growled back at Kurt loudly. “What about you? I’ve been trying to be nice to you, Kurt, and all you do is blow me off every single time! Do you know how maddening that is to me? I’ve been trying so hard and nothing works!”
Kurt clenched his fists. “That’s because the nicer you are the harder it is to let you go so I have to be like that otherwise I would just be miserable forever because I still - “
Kurt broke off and put his hands over his mouth.
Finn stared at Kurt, his eyebrows raised. “But… Kurt… before you just said that you’re not -“
He broke off as Kurt frantically shook his head and said, “Yes! That’s right! I don’t like you anymore, that’s what I said and I MEANT it!
Finn stared at him for a moment before his lips turned up in the corners. “Really, Kurt? Did you really mean it?”
Kurt stared at Finn and shouted, “Y-YES!”
Finn stared intently at Kurt and then shrugged. “Well… if that’s how you feel… I won’t bother telling you the real reason why I didn’t want you to sing with Sam.”
Kurt opened his mouth angrily, “Oh so you have an ulterior motive, huh? I knew it! You’re so obsessed with yourself that you just couldn’t bare being out-dated by Sam, you just couldn’t bare me liking Sam because the more people who like you, the more powerful you feel, is that right? Boy, you are such an IDIOT, Finn! I can’t believe you can be so closed-minded!”
Finn jumped up and threw his hand over Kurt’s mouth, muffling Kurt’s voice, before shouting, “I didn’t want you sing a duet with Sam because you’re mine! I’m the only one who should get to work with you!”
Kurt’s mouth snapped shut in shock and his eyes locked with Finn’s. Slowly, Finn moved his hand away from Kurt and rang his hands together, awkwardly, looking away from Kurt.
After what seemed like ages of Kurt just staring dumbly at Finn and Finn looking anywhere but at Kurt, Kurt finally spoke.
“W-What did you just say?” Kurt mumbled in a low voice.
Finn sighed and stole a glance at Kurt before looking down at his feet. “Look… Kurt… I… I didn’t want you to work with Sam, okay? And I didn’t want you to because it would hurt Sam’s reputation or because I didn’t want you to get hurt… even though I don’t want that at all… but anyway… I did it because I… I just want you all to myself.”
Kurt looked down at his feet, his heart beating hard in his chest. He couldn’t believe it. Was Finn saying the truth or was he just playing with him, because that would be so sick…Kurt would not be made a fool of. He breathed in a breath. Relax, Kurt, relax, he thought to himself. Don’t let this get to your head until you know for sure that he isn’t joking.
Kurt looked back up and put his hands on his hips, staring at Finn intently. “Are you serious, Finn? Do you really think that’s going to work on me? You’ll have to say more than that to gain my forgiveness,” Kurt said, in as strong a voice he could muster.
Finn looked at Kurt, blinking rapidly. “What… what, you don’t… you don’t believe me?” Finn mumbled, feeling hurt.
Kurt shook his head. “No. Why should I? Anyone can see that you’re in love with Rachel and this just doesn’t make any sense.”
Finn groaned. “Well, that’s just great, seeing as I broke up with Rachel this morning.”
Kurt sucked in a breath and his eyes bulged. Well, that was unexpected.
“Y-you d-did?” Kurt asked, trembling.
Finn nodded, smiling slightly at Kurt. “Yeah, I did. Do you believe me now?”
Kurt wanted so much to shout out “YES, YES!” but he steadied himself and shook his head in determination.
Finn sighed sadly and for a moment they were quiet until Finn said, “well… I guess I’m just going to have to prove it to you,” he said, confidently, grabbing Kurt’s arm.
Kurt drew back as electricity shot up his arm and snapped, “what do you think you’re doing?” while trying to tug his arm free.
But Finn kept a firm grip and tugged Kurt away towards the back of the school.
“I’m going to prove myself to you, Kurt,” Finn said, smiling back at him. “Come on, you can trust me.”
Kurt stared at him but didn’t say anything in reply. He knew where Finn was taking him and he couldn’t quite believe what could be happening right now. Was this real life or was he stuck in some dream?
As the approached the store room in the corner of the school, Kurt started to tremble. Finn pulled him around the building and towards the back, away from prying eyes.
“I really don’t think - “Kurt began to say but he never got the words out.
Suddenly, Finn had gently pressed him up against the wall and then in the same movement Finn was pressing himself up against Kurt, his hand snaking around Kurt’s head to rest on Kurt’s neck. Kurt could feel Finn’s slamming heartbeat against him and knew that his heart was banging just as hard. He stared at Finn in shock and was even more shocked to see the dark desire in Finn’s brown eyes as he looked back at Kurt.
And then, without further ado, Finn leant forwards and gently captured Kurt’s lips with his own. At the contact they both whimpered and Kurt felt his body tremble with emotion. His arms were shaking as he slowly moved them and tentatively wrapped them around Finn’s waist. Finn shook slightly at the extra contact and pressed harder into Kurt, pushing him up against the wall, as his lips started to move faster against Kurt’s. Kurt gasped he suddenly registered the hard thing pushing against his leg and as he gasped, his mouth opened, allowing Finn to lick the inside of Kurt’s lip. Kurt moaned loudly but before he could register about being embarrassed, Finn let out an even louder moan and Kurt burst out laughing, unable to stop himself.
At his laugh, their mouths drew away from each other and Finn leant his forehead against Kurt’s, eyeing him carefully, his chest rising and falling.
“What’s so funny?” Finn mumbled, looking concerned. “Didn’t I do it right?”
Kurt laughed again, but at Finn’s look of annoyance, he stopped himself and smiled at Finn. “You didn’t do anything wrong, Finn… but I’m pretty sure you just made the funniest noise I’ve ever heard.”
Finn blinked and then his mouth turned up into a wide smile, his eyes twinkling. “Well… I’m pretty sure you made a pretty funny noise, too, Kurt… but it didn’t make me laugh.”
Kurt pretended to look wounded. “It didn’t? What did it do, then,” he asked.
“It really, really turned me on,” Finn said, softly before leaning down to kiss Kurt passionately.
It was amazing, better than what Kurt could ever have expected. He sighed happily, his body still shaking from the pleasure of it all, as Finn continued to kiss him and press his warm, hard body up against him. Finn played with his hair as they kissed and that shot wonderful tingles down Kurt’s back. After awhile, Kurt got the nerve to slide his hands under Finn’s jumper, feeling the smooth skin of Finn’s lower back. This caused Finn to moan loudly and their kisses to become more and more heated, which Kurt wouldn’t have thought possible.
After what seemed like ages, Finn drew away for a moment, his face red and his breathing heavier. He leant forwards and rested his head on Kurt’s shoulder, wrapping his arms around Kurt and holding him as close as he could. They stood there like that for a long time, until their hearts started to slow down and come to a steady pace.
Kurt sighed and drew in the smell of Finn. It was amazing that all the anger he’d felt for Finn was gone now. He should have been angry at Finn for just kissing him without much of an explanation, but he just couldn’t bring himself to be anything but happy.
Finn sighed and drew away from him after a moment, leaning back so he could take a good look at Kurt. Kurt stared back at him in wonder and Finn blushed.
“So…umm…” Finn said softly. “Am I forgiven?”
Kurt shrugged, smiling. “That depends on what you I’m forgiving you for.”
Finn smiled and nodded. “Can you forgive me that I’ve waited until now to tell you how I really feel after weeks and weeks of feeling this way? Can you forgive me for being so dumb that I thought you would like me forever and it didn’t matter when I told you because I thought you would definitely say yes? Can you forgive me for being jealous of how much you wanted to work with Sam? Can you forgive me for going out with Rachel, when all I really wanted was to be with you?”
Kurt drew in a breath and smiled brightly at Finn in wonder. “Of course I can,” Kurt whispered before he drew forwards to capture Finn into another passionate kiss.
