Comments on the Draft

Dec 18, 2006 20:36

Excerpted from a chat I was having with someone in Yahell...

(identity concealed): yeah, and now we got democrats thinking about instituting a draft
finn_kveldulfr: Don't think it'll happen, but it's not (IMO) a bad idea.
finn_kveldulfr: Right now-- you got less than 1% of the population bearing the entire risk, difficulty, personal hardship, etc... while the rest of the population cuts their meat, licks their gravy, and goes on about their business without saying much at all.
finn_kveldulfr: Either A) the warfare going on right now is wrong and we shouldn't be involved-- in which case, why aren't people raising their voices against it? (In the Vietnam Era, evidently the main, even only, reason most people protested against it was because of the draft and the personal threat to themselves that the draft represented-- it shouldn't take a personal threat to convince people to stand up for their convictions))
finn_kveldulfr: Or B) if the warfare going on is right-- the Nation shouldn't rely on a disenfranchised few to do all the dirty work.
(identity concealed): I remember brothers and friends being sent off to die for nothing, I don't think it's a good idea ... it's just old men sending young men to die so there's more young chicks for the old guys
finn_kveldulfr: *nods* then a hell of a lot more people should be standing up and voicing that, instead of letting the military people get stretched thin while they don't say a damn thing.
(identity concealed): they will, as soon as they stop believing that there are "terrists" plotting to blow up their houses
(identity concealed): sadly, people are stupid, always was, always will be
finn_kveldulfr: *nods* the thing I think is good about the draft talk, among other things-- is if it looks like it's gonna happen, or even comes across as a nearly-happened this time around... people are gonna wake the fuck up and stop being complacent.

Comments, anyone?
