Chapter 1

“You`re not doing it.” Charlie stated.
“I am.” Colby countered like a stubborn five year old and kept tapping the keyboard.
“You have absolutely no reason to think something is wrong.”
“I’m just checking that the guy is what he says he is.”
“She met him at the scene of a raid. How much can you bluff in that situation?”
“Found him!” Colby exclaimed. “I got his employee records.”
“Is that legal?”
“It’s not illegal.”
“I’m not so sure about that….”

“What’s going on here?” Megan had sneaked behind them and both men
jumped up from their seats.

“Nothing.” Colby quickly snapped off the monitor.
“You were checking his background, weren’t you?”
“A little….”
“Can I say something right here?” Charlie interrupted. “I tried to stop him.”

“Do I need to remind you that I can kick your ass anytime I want?” Megan had
turned her focus back to Colby.
“We’re just looking after you!”
“And if you want, I can spank him when we get home.” Charlie offered.
“No need, I can do it myself if I need to.” Megan smirked. “And I have a more
productive method for punishment.” She took a pile of thick files from her desk
and slammed them on Colby’s desk. “Insurance claims for the last six months.
Enjoy.”

After she was gone Colby took a painful glance at the stack. “I honestly thought
she would go all mellow now that she’s finally getting laid on regular intervals.”
“Yeah, but at least we know he’s well endowed. Is that any consolation to you?”
“No, and how do you know how well he’s endowed?”
“She showed me.”
“She showed you!”
“It was just a picture!”
“Oh…. Okay.”

-----------------------------------------------------

David emptied the last bullet to the paper target. He put his gun down and removed
his safety glasses and ear protectors.

“Sinclair?” A voice behind him called. David didn’t need to turn to recognise
Brett’s voice. The guy had been handling the gun range for the past thirty years,
and everyone who had been there remembered him.

“What do you think?” The mechanism pulled the target closer.
“Pretty good, you’re still pulling to the left. Not much, but little bit. Doesn’t
really matter in the field anyway.”
“Yeah, but I got my fire arm test in couple weeks. Never hurts try to train a bit.”
“That’s true. By the way, I forgot to give something to Edgerton last time he was
here. Can you play delivery guy?”
“Sure, what is it?”
“Wait a minute.” Brett went back to the locker room and came back with a pair
of safety glasses. “He left them weeks ago, and I always forget them.”

David took the glasses and twisted them in his hands. “Their not his.”
“What do you mean?”
“Ian always uses the same frames and lenses, he says it cut down the number
of distractions.”

Brett thought about it. “Then they are from that guy he brought here few times.”
“What guy?”
“I can’t remember his name, but I think you know him…. Curly hair, brown eyes,
short…”
“Charlie Eppes?”
“Don’s brother?” He thought about it. “Yeah, same guy. I got to admit I was
pretty shocked.”
“That he came to the range?”
“That he picked it up so quickly. That boy was a natural.”
“Are you serious?”
“Why wouldn’t I be? By the time they were done with their lessons the kid was
shooting pure tens.”

David looked at the glasses. “Okay…. I….I’ll make sure he gets these.”

-----------------------------------------------------

“I’m back.” David announced and slumped down behind his desk.

“How did it go?” Colby asked and lifted his eyes from the stack of papers.
“Good, I just needed some time to get comfortable. Same thing every time I switch
a gun. And I got the firearm test coming up.” David paused. “Speaking of fire arms
how’s Charlie doing?”
“You mean…. the shooting.”
“Yeah.”
“Better than I expected.” Colby chuckled. “You know… that guy can still surprise
me all the time. Every time I think I can predict what he’s thinking, he does
something different.”
“Like shoot an intruder?”
“Yeah. I thought he would be shocked and all that but…. I don’t know. I like it when
he stays with the math. He’s just too…. I don’t know what, but too much something
to be involved with guns.”

“Well, it was an accident. And Cooper got away with some stitches. Did you know
that Don took him to the range to try a gun during that sniper case?”
“He told me. I can’t believe Don actually agreed to do it.”
“Well, he’s here a lot, and everyone carries a piece. Maybe you should give him some
lessons. How to handle a gun, and maintain it and that kinda things.”
“No way.” Colby almost laughed. “He doesn’t like them. If I put a gun in his hand he
would start shaking so badly he would probably shoot me.”

“Maybe.” David took the glasses from his pocket and put them to his desk drawer.
