“How is it going with Charlie?” David asked and drove his car off the parking lot.
“I think he calmed down a bit. Where are you?” Colby asked.
“I just left the office. I’m meeting Ian for dinner at that new place….. I can’t
remember it’s name. He want’s to show me something.”
“I remember the last time he wanted to show you something….”
“Yeah, but he wouldn’t take me to a restaurant for that.”
“So what do you think it is?”
“I don’t even wanna guess. Anyway, I gotta hang up, I’m coming to a crossing.”
“Okay, bye.”
David hung up.
----------------------------------------
“What the hell….” Colby stared at Charlie, who was sitting by the kitchen table.
He was currently dipping pickles into strawberry ice cream.
“What?” Charlie mumbled with his mouth full.
“Why are you eating that?”
“I met Karen today.”
“And?”
“And she told me about her cravings. She told me to try it and I did.”
“So why are you eating them now?”
“When I got started I noticed I actually like these. You know sympathy pains?”
“Yeah.”
“I think I’m having sympathy cravings.”
“Are you serious?”
“Yep. You wanna go check the nursery?”
“Sure.”
“Are you gonna help me up? I think my ankles have swollen.”
“Charlie….”
“Just kidding.” Charlie grinned and got up. “The painters finished their part so we
can carry all the stuff in.” He bounced up the stairs with Colby in tow. The storage
room where Colby’s stuff had been after he moved in was now empty. The walls
were glowing with a fresh coat of beige paint.
“So, what do you think?”
“It’s…. pink.” Colby commented. “What if we get a boy?”
“It’s not pink, it’s beige. And an infant has no idea of the preconceived notions
of gender specific colouring schemes. It’s a peaceful colour.”
“It’s kinda girly.”
“Do you want to repaint it yourself?”
“Now that I think about it it’s actually kinda pretty colour….”
“That’s what I thought. Are you hungry?”
“I am but how can you be?”
“Very easily. There’s still some pizza in the kitchen.” Charlie suggested.
“Show me the way.”
----------------------------------------
Colby was swallowing the last of his pizza slice when the doorbell rang. Charlie
went to open it and a moment later he returned with Ian and David.
“Just wait till you see what I found.” Ian was absolutely beaming. He was carrying
three overflowing shopping bags. “You’re gonna love it.”
“Love what?” Charlie asked and eyes the bag closest to him. It seemed to be full
of stuffed animals.
“All of them.” Ian dumped two bags to David’s arms and started digging the last
one. “Look.” He pulled out a soft, stuffed, baby blanket.
“Awww… that’s adorable. I didn’t even know they made those with a handgun design.”
Charlie took the blanket and showed it to Colby. In the middle of it was a big
picture of a black and white shooting target. It was circled by a row of small pistols.
“You want to wrap my baby in firearms?” Colby looked little offended.
“It’s just a blanket.” Charlie stated.
“And the kid will see guns everywhere anyway.“ Ian added. “Don has a gun, you
have a gun, David has a gun….”
“And Uncle Ian has a gun collection big enough to fill a whole room.” David continued.
“Fine, I give up.” Colby shrugged.
“Come on try this. It’s soft.” Charlie giggled. “Imagine yourself as a baby with
your tiny tushy wrapped into a soft blanky.”
Colby tried to imagine it. “You wanna change my diapers?”
“Anytime.” Charlie promised.
“I’m not sure if that was adorable or totally perverted.” David commented.
“We’re always adorable.” Charlie said. “And occasionally perverted.”
Ian was enthralled in digging the shopping bags. He pulled out a clinking
wooden mobile. “I’m still little disappointed. They didn’t have the one with
tiny bears.”
“That’s wonderful.” Charlie smiled. “Now we just have to get a crib and we can
hang that over it.”
The sniped froze. “What do you mean get a crib? I thought you already had one.”
“No, we wanted to wait till we got the nursery painted.”
Ian turned to glare at David. “You lied to me.”
“To protect you.” David said faintly. He looked like he was about to run away.
“From what?”
“Overcharging your cards?” David suggested timidly.
“Try again, Sinclair.” Ian took a menacing step closer.
“Fine, I just wanted to get out of the store!”
“How bout we all go upstairs and look at the nursery, the painters finished it today.”
Colby suggested trying to diffuse the situation.
“What colour did you paint it with?” Ian asked suspiciously.
“Pink.”
“It’s not pink, it’s beige.” Charlie corrected.
“Isn’t that pretty girly? Even for a girl.” Ian stated. He didn’t even seem to
remember he had been angry.
“How bout we go take a look?” Colby guided him to the stairs.
Charlie walked next to David and leaned closer to talk to him.
“I gotta say, Ian handles his shopping like he does his sniping. He goes for
the kill.”
