all the way across the sky

I listen to my headphones at work pretty much all day, which means that I've been running through my favorite artists quite a lot - which, in turn, means I've been wanting some variety. I've collected quite a few new artists (probably too many, hahahaha) and have especially, for whatever reason, been wanting new female vocalists in my rotation. So here's a brief rundown on a few of those ladies:

Elizabeth and the Catapult - like all the (three) artists I list in this post, I heard about this band through last.fm. The tracks I heard through the site are, for the most part, my favorites from the album - and while I really like those tracks, the ones that aren't my favorites just don't get into the rotation. Elizabeth Ziman's vocals are clear and easy to listen to, and I like it best when she's being playful, as in "Race You," "Momma's Boy" and "Perfectly Perfect" (by far my favorite track). The problem is that I'm not entirely sure if the slower, more serious sounding songs are supposed to be taken seriously. With lyrics like "everybody's got this broken feeling / like their daddy or their dog just died," I mostly hope not. I just found out that the song in question is actually a Leonard Cohen cover, so, who knows. Definitely worth checking out.

Zee Avi - is completely adorable. Apparently she got attention/a record deal through YouTube? I have no idea. These things are happening these days, I hear. And while I really like her voice and the light poppy quality of the entire album, this one mostly just gets played in the background. Favorite tracks: Bitter Heart and Kantoi (UKULELE). And, looking at her website, she's going to be in Chicago in September. Hmmm... eliezer, interested?

Shelley Short - is very folky, and even though her voice isn't amazing, I like the way she uses it, and I like her simple, melancholy songs. I couldn't even tell you why, but I've been listening to her just about constantly since I bought a couple of her albums. Songs I could find videos for: Time Machine/Submarine, and mp3s at her website. Definitely enjoying. :D

and, in conclusion: double rainbow
