the other day

Patrick works on Saturday, and I know have the day off.

I took my time getting up and then went out to do laundry. On the way back I and another random bystander watched two funky looking guys drag a third guy between them. They dragged him right into a garage and closed the door. We called the police, waited for them them to arrive, told them which garage it was, and wandered away once it was clear that they had gone in (and that there was shouting.) I called the police later to find out if I had started my career as an enemy of the Hell's Angels. Apparently he was just drunk (at 11am) and needed help getting home. I'm glad we weren't watching someone about to be parted with his kneecaps.

After Patrick was off work we went out to see Stardust and eat sushi (not in that order). I feel like I should have loved Stardust. As it was I only liked it. Probably just that I was in the wrong mindset, and also that we had to sit in the horrible seats at the front.

Patrick transited home but I had to bike. On my way over the mostly closed-off Dundas bridge a man asked me to stop to talk to him, so I did. He said he had just been released from the Don Jail earlier that day and asked for money for a meal. I gave him what I had, which was $3. Apparently he'd been in there for 11 months awaiting trial for assault. He said he broke a bouncer's finger and punctured his lung (by breaking a rib). Charming, yes. But those were the unclear details. He also told me that he had been practicing Kung Fu for 17 years, and that he had been practicing Tai Chi for years before that. This I absolutely believed. I wish I could have taken a video. He was so enthusiastic about the principles and variations of Kung Fu, and so graceful and powerful in his impromptu demonstrations that I was fully convinced. He said he had to be held in custody until his trial because he was registered with the RCMP due to his martial arts proficiency. The actual sentence was far less than the time they'd held him for, and they released him with time served. He didn't seem to hold any sort of grudge. Mostly he just seemed to want to return to Victoria BC. He found Toronto too intense.

I really haven't done that day justice in this post, but still, it was worth a try.
