Well, you know.
Tomorrow marks the first day of December. We are on the downhill towards Christmas and then the New Year. AND I"M NOT WORKING RETAIL FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 4 YEARS!!!!
Ok, so as is custom, we give gifts this time of year. My gift to you is some knowledge you can pass along to others.
--------------------------------------------------------
For anyone who has never worked in retail let me tell you that while everyone else looks forward to the holiday season, people who work retail want nothing more than it to be over!
The stores are open later, which means that the employees stay later.
The extra traffic coming through the store means there is more work, trying to get things neat and clean for the next day
People are frustrated and on short fuses, thanks to all the extra traffic and then having to wait for help
And if you are like me, working in security, then you get to see all the worst of it because you are watching the people where they can't see you. You see how people treat their children, the mess they leave behind, and how they mistreat the employees.
So, here is what you can do to spread alittle holiday cheer:
- Starts on the road, driving with care and caution for your fell humans
- Don't be in a hurry. If you are short on time, or your shopping trip is taking too long...you didn't plan ahead enough
- Ask nicely when you need help in the store, chances are if you are having a bad day, the employee's has been as bad or worse. And everyone else they have seen that day has too
- DON'T STEAL! it is not worth it, and you won't get away with it, so don't try
- NO, you can not speak to the manager, they are busy and they will tell you the same thing the employee did, and will not have to be as nice about it, because there isn't anyone to call and complain to
- If you knock something off the shelf, put it back, and in the right place. Seriously, there are labels on the shelves, which tell you where to put it
- If you pick up something and later decide you don't want it, either leave it with the check-out or put it back in the right place
- When the store closes and the lights go out, leave the store! They have been there for 6-8 hours, time to get out!
-
- Pay attention to the holiday hours signs - they will close at 6 on the dot Christmas eve (or whatever time it says) Don't try to walk in at 5 till closing and argue when they tell you the store is closed
Retail Employees are people too, they like it when you are nice to them
